Sirus Picks: Game of the Year

It’s the time of the year when we all got our personal picks for Game of the Year. 2017 is by far one of the most interesting year for gaming. We’ve got a lot of hard hitter contenders and deserving games for the title such as Guerrilla Games’ Horizon: Zero Dawn, Nintendo’s The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, ATLUS’ Persona 5, Naughty Dog’s Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, and PlatinumGames’ NieR: Automata.

While we have our upcoming Sirus Game Awards later this year, I’ve went through all the Sirus Gaming staff and contributors and asked them their personal choices for Game of the Year:

Leif Bornales, Co-Editor-In-Chief:  Persona 5 is my choice. It’s just the game that really reestablished the JRPG genre and hopefully it continues to be that way. Persona 5 was everything I hoped it to be and so much more and that is one game that really left a mark on me this year.

Roxanne Co, Contributor: Horizon: Zero Dawn – great game, dinosaur robots, good dev practices, dinosaur robots, solid and relatable characters. And dinosaur robots. Did I mention the dinosaur robots?

It’s an awesome mishmash that takes from a lot of human history and ties it up into something both futuristic and spiritual, bundled into a woman’s coming of age story and her journey to find her identity.

Jett Sia, Contributor: Persona 5 all the way! It was the most stylish game I have ever played in my life. It was aesthetic porn, the music was so vibrant and full of life, the closest game I have ever played that was akin to an anime, and was more than worth spending 160+ hours on the 1st playthrough alone.

I was so exited about it despite never playing a Persona game or know aything about the franchise that I knew I just had to pre-order the “Take Your Heart Edition” a year before it came out. The “Take Your Heart Edition” was also my 1st Collector’s Edition. The game even influenced me to play Persona 4 Golden and beat it before I purchased Persona 5 “Take Your Heart Edition”. The game also taught me so many lessons that I will always remember throughout my journey of the worst game ever called “Life”.

Justin Janitzek, Contributor: FOR HONOR on PC. Yes, it has terrible netcodes, yes, the microtransactions are pay to win in some regards, but having clocked in 284 hours despite these issues made me realize that this is the most fun I had with a multiplayer game for some time.

I too, have to admit that this was one of the most frustrating experiences I’ve had, but when it works—it’s one of the best online melee-based combat games I have ever played. I know at this point I sound like a battered housewife who keeps coming back to her abusive husband, but there’s just so much to love about this game when it “works”. Great art style, progressive melee combat (that may be the standard for future games), seamless customizability, and the cringiest yet lovable sub-reddit.

David Rix, Contributor: The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. It’s a masterpiece of a Zelda game. It’s a masterpiece of a game, period. Nintendo worked their magic and made one of the currently over used genres — open world– fresh again.

Hyrule is a place you can truly just get lost in and spend hours just wandering about, doing nothing, and still have fun. Despite spending over a hundred hours working towards becoming the hero of legend, I wouldn’t hesitate to start over again, especially since my adventure would be completely different from the first time.

May Alturas, Contributor: I’m toooorrrnnn!!! Persona 5 or Horizon: Zero Dawn? Huhu. I have to pick Persona 5! It was my first JRPG. It was such an amazing experience; playing and somehow watching an anime at the same time. Train sound effects will always be a nostalgia because of this game. Such rich story about friendship, loyalty and family. Gameplay that involves strategy, passion and humor! Everything in one package!

Jonathan Quirino, Contributor: Persona 5 for me. Content check, story check, length check, character check, gameplay check. This game was nostalgic, and at the same time legendary, no other games could make feel like a kid again. I hope they could make Persona 6 as soon as possible, I can’t wait.

It seems that Persona 5 captured most of my writers here at Sirus Gaming.

However, my personal pick for Game of the Year would be Destiny 2. I could have had chosen Horizon: Zero Dawn, but Destiny 2 keeps luring me back for more with its great endgame content. I never played the first Destiny game, and the fact that MMO doesn’t click with me, Destiny 2, however, did. I’ve spent more time, even until now, than with other games I’ve played this year. When I finished Horizon: Zero Dawn’s additional quests, it was just more on sightseeing than gameplay unlike in Destiny 2.

So that’s about it, what’s your personal pick for game of the year? Let us know down in the comments section!
