Fresh off the monumental success of Black Myth: Wukong, developer GameScience has officially unveiled its next major project. During Gamescom Opening Night Live, the studio announced Black Myth: Zhong Kui, a new single-player action RPG rooted in ancient Chinese fantasy.
The announcement was accompanied by a stunning CG trailer, confirming that the title is now officially in development. As the second entry in the Black Myth series, the game will be built using Unreal Engine 5 and will shift its focus from the Monkey King to another powerful figure from Chinese folklore: Zhong Kui, the Banisher of Evil.
According to legend, Zhong Kui was a scholar who, after tragically dying, was granted a boon by an emperor and vowed in the afterlife to rid the world of evil ghosts and specters. He is traditionally seen as a vanquisher of demons, and his story will form the backdrop for the new game.
GameScience stated that Black Myth: Zhong Kui will “deliver distinctive experiences and gameplay features that push our limits, while also bringing fresh ideas and necessary changes to address past flaws and regrets.”
The announcement comes just one year after the launch of Black Myth: Wukong, which became a global phenomenon. The developer noted that Wukong sold 10 million copies in its first three days and set a new record for the highest-rated single-player release of the year, establishing massive expectations for this newly announced follow-up.
A specific release date and platform details for Black Myth: Zhong Kui have not yet been confirmed.
