Genshin Impact Devs Share Challenges Faced in Making the Game

Genshin Impact

Recently released video game Genshin Impact is slowly making its mark in the gaming industry and its popularity is rising. This is a first for game developer miHoYo for making a gaming multi-platform at the start compared to Honkai Impact 3, another titles of theirs, had to make a PC port at a later time. So far, the responses from the players are good despite its initial criticisms of being a clone of popular video game The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

Even though the end results were successful, miHoYo confesses the development team has faced some challenges along the way. Here are a few details of what they shared to PSU in an exclusive interview.

The representative quickly confessed that making a cross-platform open-world game was not an easy thing to develop. It required them to think about the game development from a multi-platform perspective.

miHoYo stated:

It is important to understand the strengths and weaknesses of each platform, ensuring that the game runs smoothly on PC, mobile and console while leveraging the hardware capabilities of each platform. The work required to develop across multiple platforms at the same time far exceeded our expectations.

In order to implement features and create artistic resources for this cross-platform game, the team needed to develop a cross-platform automated checking tool. This facilitated the validation and checking process.

miHoYo also confessed that their team was quite younger and inexperienced with development. The PS4 hardware design presented a challenge for them since it had minimal layer, which offers a lot of freedom for development, but also made it a challenge to develop efficiency.

The developers were glad that they had a dedicated team that worked hard to solve the problems that they were facing.

And the results were quite good. The game on day one was by far satisfactory and gameplay was solid. It did not have game breaking issues and was enjoyable. Hopefully future updates will make it even more fun.

Genshin Impact is now available on PlayStation 4, PC, and mobile devices.
