Fans have been excited for Insomniac Games’ upcoming Wolverine game since it was announced on PlayStation Showcase in 2021.
What’s even greater news is that Marvel’s Wolverine will be set in the same universe as Insomniac’s Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. While some may say that it should at least be set in the same universe as the game came from Insomniac, one can safely assume that the majority of superhero video games have always been disconnected.
As spotted by IGN from the Kinda Funny interview, Bryan Intihar, the Spider-Man 2 PS5 director, has confirmed that Wolverine is indeed in the same universe as our friendly neighbourhood hero.
Intihar said that “they’re all 1048”, referencing that their Spider-Man and Wolverine are in the same universe, Earth-1048. The “1048” reference was first noted in Sony’s Across the Spider-Verse film, featuring Insomniac’s Spider-Man and its universe classified as Earth-1048.
This tie-in can further confirm that aside from the Avengers Tower in Manhattan and Wong’s note appearance in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, there are a lot of possibilities for future Marvel hero games to appear in the same universe.
The big question is: will Insomniac Games start its own Marvel Games Universe? As I always dubbed in my discussions with my team here at Sirus Gaming, it would be a great way to introduce this direction in video games as the possibilities are limitless.
In other super-hero game-related news, Electronic Arts’ Motive Studios has confirmed their developing its Iron Man game in Unreal Engine 5 instead of its publisher’s in-house engine, Frostbite. Is the Iron Man game set in the same Earth as Wolverine and Spider-Man? Who knows, this may be the start of a new tie-in Marvel universe.
