Game company Epic Games just revealed the Lumen in the Land of Nanite real-time demo.
Lumen in the Land of Nanite features the PS5 power
The new real-time demo that Epic Games was showing recently is running on the newly announced Unreal 5 game engine and it showcases what the PlayStation 5 can do. The engine also runs on other platforms as well like the Xbox Series X, PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox one, iOS, Android, and Mac. This is built using two new core technologies, which are Nanite and Lumen. This achieves photorealism and can be used in game instead of being just used on cinematics.
Epic Games revealed that one of its goals is to achieve photorealism equal to what we have with movie CG and real life. These resources can now be used for practical uses by developers of all sizes via new tools and content libraries.
With the Nanite tech, artists can now create as much geometric detail as the eye can see. This tech can offer film-quality source art that includes hundreds of millions, even billions of polygons and can be imported directly into the Unreal Engine. In short, cinematics visuals now achievable in gameplay with the next gen consoles. With this tech, there is no more need to save up for polygon count, memory, or draw count because there is no loss in quality at all.
Lumen technology is the next lighting tech featured in Unreal Engine 5. Epic Games reveal that it is a fully dynamic global illumination solution that instantly reacts to scene and light changes. Light can bounce infinitely and the reflections are just huge. The scales could range from kilometers to millimeters.
With the Lumen technology, artists can now easily make dynamic scenes. No more need for the lightmap bakes to finish because it just does it instantly.
Unreal Engine 5 is just on the next level. Unbelievable.
