Blizzard recently explained what will happen to the loot boxes and old currency from the original game when Overwatch 2 launches soon.
When Blizzard decided to announce that Overwatch 2 will not have any loot box system, the fans were worried as to what will happen to all of their unopened loot boxes that they have accumulated for a while and also the currency that they earned. Credits, OWL tokens, and competitive points could be easily transferred but without any loot box system on the sequel, what happens to theirs?
Luckily, Blizzard had an Ask Me Anything thread on the official Games subreddit, which Overwatch Commercial Lead Jon Spector explained. The currency will stay with the player and transfer to Overwatch 2, which was true, but has a condition. There will be certain items in the sequel that will not be purchasable with the old currency. It needs to be the modern one since Overwatch 2 will have their own.
For the loo boxes, all of them will be opened before transfer and then the contents will stay with the player. They can then transfer those to Overwatch 2 without issues. The report about the old currency and loot boxes would just be wiped were not true at all. This should ease the worries of the fans now.
Overwatch 2 launches on October 4, 2022 in early access for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch. It will be free-to-play.
