According to a recent patent by game company Sony Interactive Entertainment, an upcoming PlayStation “Pro” model could be in development right now.
The patent was discovered by T3 and it suggested that the next model will be more powerful with dual-GPU housed inside. It sounds ridiculous, but it could be possible.
Check out the abstract:
In a multi-GPU simulation environment, frame buffer management may be implemented by multiple GPUs rendering respective frames of video, or by rendering respective portions of each frame of video. One of the GPUs controls HDMI frame output by virtue of receiving frame information from the other GPU(s) and reading out complete frames through a physically connected HDMI output port. Or, the outputs of the GPUs can be multiplexed together.
The interesting part is that these two GPUs will be “communicatively coupled” and can be used for home console and cloud gaming usage. This suggests that this next model could be super high-end. It even reveals that it would need more memory for it to work properly.
While a Pro model would be interesting to see, the problem would be its cooling system. Since it is double GPU, the heating of the components would become a big issue. If I were to speculate, it would need a bigger housing or more fans just to cool it off. It would not even surprising to me if it will need liquid cooling. That would definitely increase the value of this future PS5 model.
PlayStation 5 is now available worldwide.
