The PS5 will be receiving its second major system update this September 15th. The announcement was made Hideaki Nishino, Senior Vice President for Platform Experience on PlayStation.Blog.
The update will have various enhancements to the PS5 experience, including 3D audio support for built-in TV speakers and the adding of M.2 SSD storage expansion, which enables players to play more games and play media apps directly from storage.
SIE will also be expanding mobile features with support for PS Remote Play. Starting on September 23rd, users will be able to view Share Screen broadcasts on PS App.
PS5 September System Software Update Features
PS5 UX Enhancements
- Custom Control Center. Users now have the option to customize their Control Center, including rearranging or choosing which controls to hide at the bottom of the screen.
- Enhanced Game Base. Using Game Base, players can now easily view and write messages to friends and Parties.
- Game Library and Home Screen Updates. If you have both PS4 and PS5 versions of the same game installed, they’ll both appear in 2 separate “Installed” tabs in the Game Library and on the Home Screen. The game’s installed platforms will be highlighted for increased visibility.
- Screen Reader Controls. By pressing the “PS + Triangle buttons”, players can pause or resume Screen Reader and by pressing “PS + R1 buttons”, have it repeat anything it reads.
New Gaming and Social Experience Customizations
- PlayStation Now Resolution Selector and Connection Test Tool. Depending on the game, PS Now subscribers can choose between 720p or 1080p for their game streaming preferences. They will also have access to troubleshooting tools to help them identify any problems with their connection.
- New Accolade Type: “Leader”. Players can now award other players with a fourth accolade type, “Leader”, following an online match.
- Automatic Capture of “Personal Best” Videos. A video clip for a player’s personal best in challenges will now be automatically recorded. They can share clips directly from their challenge card from Media Gallery.
- New Trophy Tracker. The new trophy tracker now lets players access up to five trophies per game through the Control Center.
3D Audio Support for Built-in TV Speakers
The new PS5 system update will add support for 3D audio through built-in TV speakers. The feature can be accessed through the Sound menu, and it transforms standard two-channel TV speaker audio into 3D sound.
Players with a Pulse 3D Wireless Headset now have access to equalizer settings from Sound Controls.
M.2 SSD Storage Expansion
PS5 users can expand their storage capacity with an M.2 SSD. It is a high-speed solid state drive that can be installed in both the base PS5 console and the the PS5 Digital Edition.

PS Remote Play App and PS App Enhancements
- PS Remote Play App Over Mobile Networks
- Players using the mobile app for iOS and Android now have the option of using a mobile data connection when WiFi is not available.
- A 5 Mbps broadband connection is required for PS Remote Play. For best results a connection of at least 15 Mbps is recommended.
- Users can set their preferred video quality for mobile data streaming to help manage the amount of data used via mobile connection.
- View Share Screen Broadcasts on PS App
- Starting on September 23rd, a PS App update will be give users the ability to view their friends’ Share Screen broadcasts together.
- A friend on mobile can join a Party voice chat with another friend on PS5. They can ask their PS5 friend to start their Share Screen broadcast. Only PS5 players can broadcast via Share Screen.
- It may take one week for Android users to update as theirs will be a phased release.
PS4 Console Enhancements
The PS5 won’t be the only one receiving a system update. The good old PS4 will be getting a handful of new features, one of them, the ability to view PS5 trophies on their PS4 profile. Players can view others’ PS5 trophies from their PS4. In terms of chat functionality, party owners now have the ability to disband a Party without having to individually remove each player. This applies to both PS4 and PS5 users.
