Square Enix developers recently shared some details about the development of Tactics Ogre Reborn and its biggest challenge.
Tactics Ogre Reborn Director Takashi Katano recently spoke with PlayStation Blog to reveal the development team’s biggest challenge faced in development. He said it was designing a UI that would be compatible with the mouse and controller for the new game version.
At first, the team assumed from the start that the mouse operation would be easy to do and it just needed to incorporate elements like icons to support it. They were wrong because there was no “ready to go” solution to make mouse operation possible without compromising the convenience of controller operation. The team had to make various versions and improvements during development until the end.
Katano revealed that technical issues also appeared because it was originally released on an older platform which made it quite compatible with it. Changing it for modern platforms was quite a difficult task to complete.
On the PSP version, the game stored data based on the color look up table or CLUT. This was a mechanism that would determine color by combining multiple elements in a technical way. If they stuck with this system, it would limit their ability to work at higher resolutions so they had to reconstruct everything, which was very hard to do.
Tactics Ogre Reborn launches on November 11, 2022 on PS4, PS5, PC, and Nintendo Switch.
