Marvel Games’ Executive Director Possibly Hinted An Opportunity With Spider-Man

Marvel Studios has executed crossovers perfectly in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As we get to witness exciting announcements like The Avengers project by Square Enix and the upcoming release of the PS4 exclusive, Spider-Man, from Insomniac Games, this is definitely a year for Marvel fans! But will there be a crossover in the Marvel gaming universe too? Who knows… sorry, DC, you’ll have to scootch over… for now.

Just yesterday, Bill Rosemann, the Executive Director for Marvel’s video-game division, was asked by The Telegraph regarding the possibility of getting other Marvel heroes do a cameo in Insomniac Games’ Spider-Man. He pointed out that the New York in Spider-Man is the Marvel New York. Following the line of thought, this means iconic (or not) heroes from the Marvel universe might appear by names or logos – and even locations. There is still that possibility that other characters will have the chance to make their own cameo appearance.

This is Marvel’s New York. This is a Marvel game. It’s not in a bubble. It is the New York that you want Spider-Man in. So yeah, uh, if you’re a Marvel fan coming to play this game you’ll see familiar names and logos and locations and we’re lucky that you’ll see, oh, that is the Sanctum Sanctorum?! It’s not going to be a focus but you’ll be able to swing by it. You’ll feel like, this isn’t just any New York City, I’m in the Marvel universe. This is Marvel’s New York. There will be a lot of elements that will make you feel like it’s part of a larger story.[/alert]

Rosemann said, when he was asked about his “aspiration” for a Marvel Gaming Universe by the publication, that he doesn’t want to announce anything official as of yet but hints after that even the Marvel Cinematic Universe started with single-films first before slowly branching out every Marvel superhero. He admits that the first intention was they’re going for how Iron Man was able to extend its plot for a bigger one. It’s “going to be hard enough,” said Rosemann. They then decided to stick with just making the best Spider-Man game and see whatever happens after that.

I don’t want to put the cart before the horse. Even in the MCU they started with individual movies.

There was. I mean, they tacked on that Nick Fury scene at the end of Iron Man but did anyone think it would culminate in The Avengers? Or now Avengers Infinity War? That was a pipe dream. The first intention was, let’s just make the best Iron Man movie. We’re approaching it the same way. This is going to be hard enough. Let’s just make the best Spider-Man game. Let’s do that. The rest will take care of itself. Who knows what the future holds? We just want to make sure each individual game is awesome, is great. Again we don’t want to trap people and contain people. We want to give them freedom.[/alert]

Spider-Man is set to launch on September 7 exclusively on the PS4.
