Did we put too much hope for Resident Evil 3?
Following the success of Resident Evil 2 last year, fans have been expecting the sequel to be even better. It was safe to say that Resident Evil 3 was one of the more anticipated games of 2020. But when it released on the 3rd of April, it got rather mixed reactions out of its player base. So what exactly happened?
Well to start with, the Resident Evil 3 Remake missed a lot of opportunities to expand its own story. Instead, the remake cuts quite a bit of content from the original game and shortens its own longevity. The entire experience the game had to offer could be considered a bit lackluster.

In a Single Night
The main campaign could be completed in less than 10 hours. Storywise, this would make sense. As the vents of Raccoon City only ever happened for our protagonists in one dreadful evening. But it’s not exactly great news for those hoping to get some bang for their buck. The original was quite short enough as it was, and the Remake went on ahead and decided to rush its own story.
It wasn’t just the players who considered it too short either. It seems Capcom was all too aware of how little content Resident Evil 3 Remake had to offer and decide to release Resident Evil Resistance alongside it to give the illusion of a bit of length. Needless to say, the inclusion of a tacked on multiplayer didn’t help make things any better.
Differences Between Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3
For both the original and the remake, Resident Evil 3 always did take a more action packed route in contrast to its predecessor. As to where the Resident Evil 2 Remake liked to take things on the slower pace while occasionally picking up, Resident Evil 3 comes at you with everything its got.
Unfortunately for Resident Evil 3, its fast paced nature in comparison to its predecessor didn’t exactly help its already short play time. The developers over at Capcom didn’t really take the time to properly build up the horror of the game or control its pacing.
Could’ve Been Better
Short game time aside, there were plenty of things that could’ve made Resident Evil 3 Remake a bit better. Instead of Resistance, the inclusion of the much beloved Mercenaries Mode from the previous installments would’ve made for a better addition.
Perhaps even the Survivor Mode could be brought back from Resident Evil 2 Remake to give a different scenario for the other survivors Jill met throughout her journey. For the life of me, I can’t guess why Capcom decided that Resistance was the better add-on to release beside Resident Evil 3. Perhaps because of the microtransactions that will earn them more money?
Either way, Resident Evil 3 was disappointing in that it felt like such a rushed job. It’s nowhere near a disaster, but nowhere near the hype that it deserved to have.
