Dragon Age Creative Director Forms Yellow Brick Games with Ubisoft and EA Veterans

Former Creative Director of Dragon Age series Mike Laidlaw has founded a new studio in Quebec City called Yellow Brick Games.

Laidlaw is joined by colleagues who are game industry veterans like Thomas Giroux, Jeff Skalski, and Frederic St-Laurent B. The new studio is looking to take a back to basics approach to game development. It will be “centered on the pleasure of crafting new experiences, in a flexible, more personable environment that an independent studio can provide,” said Giroux, now Yellow Brick Games’ CEO.

Skalski is the studio’s COO and executive producer, and has served as Senior Producer at EA and Ubisoft in the past, while Laidlaw is the chief creative officer. St-Laurent B has been a game director for Ubisoft Quebec is now the game director on the game company of an unannounced first project.

“We have learned a lot from working on world-class, multi-year projects with thousands of colleagues and we want to take a different approach,” Skalski said. “Leveraging a smaller talented team where people come first, we will create amazing worlds and experiences for all others to enjoy. The market is moving fast, and we have no desire to play catchup and chase it when we can influence where it goes.”

“For veterans of big-studio productions like myself and much of our team, this is the perfect time to get back to a small, agile, and highly motivated group,” Laidlaw added. “We want our games here at Yellow Brick to take potentially millions of players on wondrous journeys, and we want every member of our team to have a direct impact on the new worlds we’re creating.”

Currently, the Yellow Brick gaming studio is made up of 15 people and most of them are working-from-home.
