Baldur’s Gate 3 Developer Interested in DLC Development After Big Success

Baldur’s Gate 3 might be getting a DLC after it became super successful after its big launch.

Larian Studios Founder and CEO Swen Vincke shared an update about the potential DLC expansion plans. After it got a successful launch last week and had a concurrent player peak of more than 800,000, it seems the developers are highly interested in adding more major content to the game.

PC Gamer spoke with the CEO to talk about the possibility of an expansion for Baldur’s Gate 3. Vincke told the publication that “honestly, we haven’t started on an expansion.”

Baldur Gate 3’s level cap is quite short, it ends at level 12, but with the usual Dungeons and Dragons game, it stops at 20. The expansion would be the best way to expand that level cap, but Vincke has an explanation.

Larian’s CEO reasoned why building out the content in this way would become difficult from the studio’s standpoint. He explained that if a player would be close the Level 20 in DnD, his character would become overpowered together with their abilities. This would be the same as in Baldur’s Gate 3 where the challenges that they have designed would be meaningless instead.

“[Level 12-20] adventures require a different way of doing things, in terms of antagonists you’re going to have to deal with, which require a lot of development to do them properly. Which would make this much more than an expansion in terms of development effort.

“A lot of D&D adventures are sub-level 12 for precisely that reason. So it sounds like neat, easy expansion material until you start thinking about it and it’s not as easy as one would imagine.”

The expansion might not be in the horizon right now, but Larian Studios is open to the possibility though.
