Assassin’s Creed Valhalla Almost Had Naval Combat Gameplay

One of the best features of AC Black Flag in the past was its awesome naval battles. It was not that great in AC Rogue, but it was still enjoyable. Today we find out that this particular feature almost made it to the newest title, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla.

According Game Producer Julien Laferriere in an interview with Game Informer, naval battle was one of the plans they were thinking about implementing in Valhalla.

Laferriere stated:

We had our pillars pretty early, and we stuck to them. We tweaked in terms of balance … but we stayed true to those pillars. But one thing I can say that didn’t make it through that we thought might work very early on was naval combat.

The development team realized that Vikings actually did not do much naval combat in real history. Sure, they used boats during raids, but they were sailing on rivers only. According to the developers, they treated it like a transportation vehicle for short distances. Also, Valhalla did not have seas in its maps.

All of the other features worked well even without naval battles.

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is now available on PlayStation 4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Stadia, and PC.
