Baldur’s Gate 3 Defiled Temple Moon Puzzle Solution

There is a puzzle in the Defiled Temple in Baldur’s Gate 3 that involves turning discs on the floor. Placing the markings on these discs on their right places will open up a door within the temple.

Read ahead as we talk about the solution to the Defiled Temple’s puzzle in Baldur’s Gate 3.

How to solve the Defiled Temple Puzzle

Within the Defiled Temple, you will see a chamber with four conjoined circles on the floor in the middle of the room. These discs also have different markings on four of their arc sides that resemble the phases of the moon. The objective is to turn the discs to move the sides to the right positions.

Although it is an optional item, you can obtain the Dwarf’s Poem which can be looted from an enemy in the Goblin Camp, and this item will provide a clue on how the phases should be positioned on the puzzle.

The lines “May the full moon never touch the stars once more, May darkness never conquer the Moonmaiden’s door” from the poem give the hint that all the full moon or light markings should be on the north disc (nearest the locked door), while all the new moon or dark markings should be on the south disc (nearest the door you passed through), leaving the half moon markings on the outer edges of both the east and west discs.

The positions of the discs that we started with had all of the dark markings on the other edges of the discs, spaced apart equally; you may have a different starting point. All discs can only turn a quarter of the way counter clockwise when interacted with.

If you have the same starting position as we had, here’s the solution to this puzzle:

    1. North
    2. West
    3. West
    4. West
    5. South
    6. West
    7. West
    8. East
    9. East
    10. South
    11. East
    12. East

The orientation of the half moons, whether the light side is facing inwards or outwards, would not matter as long as they are on the right positions.

Once solved, the door up ahead will open up, leading to the Underdark. Solving the puzzle will also give your party 35XP each, and an additional 25XP for any Sage, including Gale, in your active party for The Phases Unfold inspiration.

    Defiled Temple Alternate Solution

An alternative way to open the door in the Defiled Temple is to approach the pillar northeast of the discs. Your perception check should help discover a lever on the wall behind the pillar. This lever has a DC 15 for Dexterity when lockpicking. If you are successful with the check, it will open the door up ahead, but it will only reward your party members 15XP each.
