The Whispering Depths is a location in Baldur’s Gate 3. It is located underneath the Blighted Village and it is inhabited by ferocious spiders, but it is also where some hidden treasures have long been stashed. How to reach the Whispering Depths
Reach the well near the Blighted Village waypoint and descend into it to enter the Whispering Depths. Another way to reach the depths is by heading into the apothecary by the same waypoint and going down to the basement via a hatch on the floor. You will then reach the Forge, where you will find a cracked wall by the southwest section. Destroy this cracked wall to reveal another path to the Whispering Depths.
Whispering Depths Walkthrough
The Whispering Depths has been made into a lair by Phase Spiders that have spread their webs all across the cave system. Saving throws will prevent your party from getting enwebbed which prevents the afflicted unit from moving and it also gives a disadvantage at rolls.
To prevent getting too hampered by the enwebbed status, you can find the Spiderstep Boots which can be looted from a heavy chest located at X:-510, Y:-400 within the depths; this is more accessible if you take the well to reach the depths.
Phase Spider Matriarch Boss Guide
The Phase Spider Matriarch is the boss of the depths and is located in the middle of the map. Before engaging with her, it’s best to prepare for the fight and destroy the eggs in the area. It is also recommended to bring Gale to the party or any ranged character that has a ranged fire spell that can burn the eggs and the web bridges.
First off, locate the three clutches of spider eggs that are around where the boss is. There is one clutch on the ground level, and the other two are on the upper level where the web bridges are. Destroying these eggs will prevent baby spiders from hatching out and becoming another wave of nuisance to deal with when facing the matriarch.
Clear out the clutch on the lower level first without alerting the matriarch or while the matriarch is far away. Next, go to the upper level and stay hidden. The matriarch will be patrolling the upper level using the web bridges. You can actually destroy a web bridge with a fire spell, so use this technique and make the matriarch fall to the lower level as she steps on the bridge. This will cause damage to the matriarch and makes the upper level safe for you to destroy the remaining eggs.
You may also want to clear out the other orcs near the center of the lair just to make the encounter easier. Take note that these are phase spiders that have the ability to teleport and once one spider is alerted of your presence, the matriarch will also be alerted. You can also initiate the fight by doing a sneaky first hit on the matriarch from the upper level which will make her teleport back up.
Once you have engaged the matriarch, pay attention to where she is standing. If she is back up on a web bridge, you can shoot the bridge again to deal some massive damage. Keep repeating this tactic every time she goes back on a bridge and this should kill her within the third or fourth time. Once the matriarch is dead, you will get 20XP for each party member and you can loot the body to get the Poisoner’s Robe.
Dark Amethyst Location
Exploring deeper into the depths, you will find the Dark Amethyst at X:-560, Y:-356. The Dark Amethyst is needed to open The Necromancy of Thay book and is also part of the Search the Cellar quest.
Entrance to the Underdark
After filling the matriarch, you will find the Whispering Depths waypoint. There is also a huge hole nearby which leads to the Underdark, but before jumping down in it, you will need to have and cast the Feather Fall spell first to survive the landing.
