The Mantis Shrimp is one of the bosses in Dave the Diver. It is an optional boss that only appears during a stormy night. Unlike the real-life animal, this Mantis Shrimp has grown to giant proportions. Read ahead as we share some tips on how to encounter and defeat the Mantis Shrimp in Dave the Diver.
How to unlock the Mantis Shrimp
The Mantis Shrimp is part of the Stormy Night 2 sub mission which is unlocked after defeating the Truck Hermit Crab and completing the Stormy Night sub mission. Wait for the next stormy night and you will be informed that another vortex has appeared which leads to the Mantis Shrimp’s den.
The vortex will appear just at the 0m to 50m depth on the far right side of the Blue Hole. In case you fail the fight or miss the vortex, you will have another opportunity to fight the Mantis Shrimp on the next stormy night.
How to defeat the Mantis Shrimp
The Mantis Shrimp is a heavy puncher that can land powerful blows. The trick to defeating it is to read its attacks and stay relatively close to the left wall at most times. It has a number of punch attacks that can easily be read and evaded. It is recommended to get an upgraded gun, either a rifle or a sniper rifle, to deal enough damage and keep the fight relatively short.
The Mantis Shrimp is quite a defensive boss to fight. It usually has both of its fists covering its eyes which are its weak spots. There are times where it lowers its guard, giving you a clear line of sight to its eyes.
The Mantis Shrimp has two types of punches and an ultimate attack. The first type of punch comes from the right hand. This punch has three angles where it can be thrown and it is usually towards the direction of your last location. There are safe spots where you can evade this punch and the recommended ones are right underneath its left elbow and the top right corner near the spikes.
The second type of punch comes from its right hand and is the more powerful one. This punch usually goes from the top right to the bottom left. Once you see the boss wind up for this punch, you can stay near its leg where it is safe, but it is recommended to immediately swim towards the upper left side. This is because right after this punch, the Mantis Shrimp will reveal its eyes while recovering and it is easier to get closer to the eyes form the upper side of the room.
For its ultimate attack, the Mantis Shrimp will slam the ground with its fists, sending a quake in the room which lowers down a chain and drops some ammo refill. The boss will then wind up its fist from the right side of the room, releasing it into a powerful punch that is strong enough to generate huge currents that can drag you toward the spikes.
To counter this ultimate attack, it is recommended to stay close to the upper right corner where the chain handle appears. As soon as you see the handle, pull the chain down up to the height where you meet the claw that is attached on the other end of the chain. This claw will then serve as a punching ball that will absorb the attack and repel the boss backwards.
If countered properly, the Mantis Shrimp will be sent back to the right side of the room and will take a bit longer to recover, leaving you some time to attack twice.
Once the Mantis Shrimp has been defeated, you can carve its body twice to get a Mantis Shrimp Meat and a Mantis Shrimp Tail.
