Eidos Montreal Founder Confirms Sony’s Interest in Buying Square Enix

The founder also shared some interesting info about Square Enix.

The founder of game company Eidos Montreal has recently confirmed in an interview that Sony was actually interested in buying Square Enix.

Founder Stephane D’Astous recently spoke with media outlet GamesIndustry.biz talking about his experience with Square Enix. He revealed some very interesting details about the popular game publisher including some of their notorious practices and activities. One of those was a rumor that he heard a while ago.

According to the founder, he heard a rumor that claimed Sony was interested in buying Square Enix, but not all of it. In particular, they were very interested in buying Square Enix Tokyo.

“If I read between the lines, Square Enix Japan was not as committed as we hoped initially,” said D’Astous. “And there are rumors, obviously, that with all these activities of mergers and acquisitions, that Sony would really like to have Square Enix within their wheelhouse. I heard rumors that Sony said they’re really interested in Square Enix Tokyo, but not the rest. So, I think [Square Enix CEO Yosuke] Matsuda-san put it like a garage sale.”

Note that D’Astous did not clarify that he heard this rumor from someone from his company or someone else. It does confirm the other rumors that also said about Sony’s interest in buying Square Enix. He just made it more specific with his source.

Sony or Square Enix have not made any statement to confirm nor deny this claim.
