How to Get the Master Sword in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom

The Master Sword is no doubt the most iconic weapon in the Legend of Zelda franchise and it once again makes its return to Tears of the Kingdom. While Link did get the Master Sword in the previous game, it is destroyed by Ganondorf at that start of this one. You can still acquire the Master Sword again with the right steps.

Using this guide, learn all you can about getting the Master Sword in Tears of the Kingdom.

How to Get the Master Sword in Tears of the Kingdom?

To get the Master Sword, you have to get it from the head of the Light Dragon. The best way to do this is to first cleanse the Great Hyrule Forest and ask the Deku Tree for its location. You can get the Master Sword from the Light Dragon any time but it is always moving and the quest marker the Deku tree gives you allows you to locate it.

Getting the Master Sword isn’t part of the main quest in Tears of the Kingdom. So you can miss it, but on the bright side you can also encounter it randomly while roaming around the open world. There’s no set location for it and that’s because the Mater Sword is on the head of the Light Dragon who is constantly moving around.

This is why the best method to get the Master Sword is by cleansing The Great Hyrule Forest including the Deku Tree at the north of Lookout Landing. This involves fighting bosses before speaking with the Deku Tree who will give you the Recovering The Master Sword quest. Note that this quest isn’t actually necessary to get the Master Sword, but the quest marker it leaves is really useful for finding the location because it always moves from place to place.

Once you actually get to the Great Dragon, you have to find a way to get to its head. Which can be a hard thing to do, because it’s always flying above the ground. The best way to get to it is by using the nearest Skyview Tower to reach it.

After landing on top of the Light Dragon, run towards its head and interact with the Master Sword. This will start a minigame which needs two full stamina circles to even complete. Eating food will not help here. Instead convert your hearts into stamina which can be done by talking to the Horned Statue.

When you’ve completed the mini-game the Master Sword is yours. You can now use it any time you want to.

Does the Master Sword Break in Tears of the Kingdom?

The Master Sword in Tears of the Kingdom only losses its durability after use but it won’t break. Unlike other weapons it will only enter a cooldown where you won’t be able to use it for about ten minutes.

While the Master Sword is the most iconic weapon, you’ll want to save it for some truly tough boss fights. It depletes its energy easily and it’ll take a while before you can use it again. The concept is pretty much the same in Breath of the Wild.

That’s how to get the Master Sword in Tears of the Kingdom. Now you know how to get one of the most iconic blades in video game history.
