According to a recent report by a media outlet, game company Square Enix has reported that video game Marvel’s Avengers has not yet regained back the development costs.

The game has not made a lot of profit this year and this is due to the disappointment from the players who were initially hyped for the game. Now, only a few players are staying behind and in fact it has been reported that more or less 90 percent of the player base has dropped from Steam. This is now giving Square Enix trouble since it has not yet regained the development costs, which is over 100 million dollars.

In the translated Q & A from Square Enix’s quarterly meetings, President Yosuke Matsuda shared that the operating loss of around 7 billion yen in the second quarter. Despite the losses, the game company wants to move forward by growing their sales.

“In addition to the amortization of the game’s development costs, another significant factor associated with [Marvel’s Avengers] was the fact that we undertook a major advertising campaign at the time of its launch to make up for delays in our marketing efforts resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Matsuda. “There is a certain amount of development costs still to be amortized in 3Q, but we want to recoup it by growing our sales going forward.”

The development costs over 100 million dollars but only sold fewer copies than expected. Hopefully with the upcoming content coming to the game, it will gain back profits and in time regain those big costs. Kate Bishop is coming this December 8. More characters are reportedly coming like She-Hulk, War Machine, Spider-Man (PlayStation exclusive), and Clint Barton’s Hawkeye.

Marvel’s Avengers is now available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. Next-gen versions coming next year.
