A new rumor revealed that the next-gen console PlayStation 5 could possibly be getting a new model soon.
According to a media outlet DigiTimes, the suppliers including foundry TSMC are expected to kick off production for the redesign of Sony’s PS5 console. It is expected to go into production between the second and third quarters of 2022.
A Reddit user shared a quote from Sony Interactive Entertainment investor’s call from last month. Here’s the statement made by CFO Hiroki Totoki:
As I said earlier, we’re aiming for more sales volume than the PS4 [during year 2]. But can we drastically increase the supply? No, that’s not likely. The shortage of semiconductors is one factor, but there are other factors that will impact on the production volume. So at present we would like to aim at [beating] second year sales of 14.8 million, which was the second year of PS4. For example, we could find maybe a secondary resource, or by changing the design we could cope.
SIE’s aim this time will be to increase the production so that they can beat the PS4’s sales numbers at its peak. The company will be sourcing their components from multiple vendors and could possibly be revising the design for improvements. This could possibly mean a whole new look to the PS5.
Again, take this with a grain of salt for now.
