Hazelight Studios, the masters of cooperative gaming who brought us the critically acclaimed It Takes Two and A Way Out, is back with a brand new title poised to capture the hearts of players once again: Split Fiction. If you’re craving another unforgettable co-op experience, this latest game from Hazelight should be on your radar.

But what exactly is Split Fiction? And why are gamers already buzzing with anticipation? Let’s dive into everything you need to know about Hazelight’s latest project, from its core gameplay and story hints to its release details and what makes it stand out in the crowded gaming landscape.

    What is Split Fiction?

At its heart, Split Fiction is an action-adventure game built from the ground up for two-player cooperative gameplay. Staying true to Hazelight’s formula, Split Fiction promises a deeply intertwined narrative and gameplay experience where teamwork isn’t just an option, but it’s the very foundation of the game.

Early trailers and developer insights suggest a narrative centered around two distinct characters with unique abilities and perspectives who must learn to collaborate to overcome challenges. Expect a blend of puzzle-solving, action sequences, and emotional storytelling, all designed to be experienced alongside a friend, partner, or family member.

Hazelight’s Co-op DNA: Why They’re the Perfect Studio for Split Fiction

Hazelight Studios has carved a unique niche in the gaming world by focusing almost exclusively on cooperative titles. Their previous games, A Way Out and It Takes Two, were not only commercial successes but also garnered critical acclaim for their innovative co-op mechanics and emotionally engaging narratives. It Takes Two

A Way Out, launched in 2018, pioneered a split-screen, story-driven co-op adventure focused on two inmates escaping prison. It emphasized asymmetrical gameplay and forced players to rely on each other in meaningful ways.

It Takes Two, launched in 2021, elevated the co-op genre to new heights, winning Game of the Year in The Game Awards 2021. Its incredibly diverse gameplay, charming story, and seamless co-op integration set a new standard for the genre.

With Hazelight’s experience in co-op experience, the studio is uniquely positioned to deliver on the promise of Split Fiction. They understand how to craft co-op experiences that are not just fun to play together, but also meaningful and emotionally resonant, fostering genuine connection between players.

Gameplay: Action, Adventure, and Asymmetrical Co-op

While specific gameplay mechanics are still under wraps, we can anticipate Split Fiction will follow Hazelight’s trend of varied and inventive gameplay. Expect a blend of:

    • Action Sequences: Trailers hint at dynamic action sequences, potentially involving combat, platforming, and chase scenes, all designed to be tackled cooperatively.
    • Puzzle Solving: Hazelight games are known for their clever puzzles that require teamwork and communication. Split Fiction will likely feature environmental puzzles and challenges that demand coordination between players with different abilities.
    • Asymmetrical Gameplay: It’s highly probable that each character in Split Fiction will possess unique skills and perspectives, requiring players to rely on each other’s strengths to progress. This asymmetrical approach is a hallmark of Hazelight’s design, creating truly collaborative experiences.

Story and Setting: Unraveling the Mystery

Details about Split Fiction‘s story are intentionally vague at this stage, adding to the intrigue. However, we can glean some hints.

The title “Split Fiction” itself suggests a narrative told from two distinct viewpoints. This could involve characters with conflicting goals, different interpretations of events, or unique insights into the game’s world.

Like Hazelight’s previous titles, expect an emotionally driven narrative. Their games often explore themes of relationships, trust, and overcoming adversity, and Split Fiction is likely to continue this trend.

Trailers showcase visually striking environments, hinting at a rich and imaginative game world waiting to be explored.

As more information emerges, the story and setting of Split Fiction are sure to become major talking points and key reasons for players to jump in.

Release Date, Platforms, and the Friend’s Pass

Anticipation is building for Split Fiction‘s arrival. Here’s what we know so far:

Split Fiction will be released on March 6, 2025, on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

Continuing Hazelight’s player-friendly approach, Split Fiction is expected to include a Friend’s Pass system. This innovative feature allows players who purchase the game to invite a friend to play the entire adventure with them for free. This significantly lowers the barrier to entry for co-op gaming and encourages players to share the experience.

Is Friend’s Pass going to be cross-platform? Actually, yes! It’s been confirmed that the feature will not be limited to the platform you bought the game on. This means that if you have a copy of Split Fiction on PlayStation 5 and your friend only has a gaming PC, you can still use the Friend’s Pass. Your friend will simply download the Friend’s Pass version of Split Fiction,

Why Split Fiction is a Game to Watch

Split Fiction is shaping up to be more than just another co-op game. It’s a Hazelight Studios title, and that carries significant weight. Here’s why it deserves your attention:

      • Co-op Innovation: Hazelight consistently pushes the boundaries of cooperative gameplay, and Split Fiction promises to continue this tradition with its unique dual perspectives and interwoven mechanics.
      • Emotional Storytelling: Expect a narrative that resonates emotionally, exploring relatable themes through the lens of cooperative play.
      • High Production Quality: From stunning visuals to polished gameplay, Hazelight games are known for their high level of craftsmanship.
      • Friend’s Pass Accessibility: The Friend’s Pass makes it easier than ever to dive into a premium co-op experience with a friend, offering exceptional value.

Split Fiction has the potential to be another landmark title in the co-op genre, further solidifying Hazelight Studios’ position as masters of collaborative gaming.
