Hangar 13 Confirms Infamous Racing Sequence Still Appearing in Mafia: Definitive Edition

The original Mafia game had a particularly difficult sequence to go through and everyone hated it: the infamous racing sequence. Tommy Angelo, the protagonist, is forced to race in this particular part of the game without any warning and it also made the car quite difficult to drive. It was a disaster waiting to happen.

As cruel as it may seem, game studio Hangar 13 gives us some bad news, and President and Chief Creative Officer Haden Blackman is here to confirm it.

According to Blackman, the definitive edition will STILL have that infamous racing sequence and there is no way around it. He comments that back in the original game, “it was almost like a badge of honor when you made it through.”

This particular section of the game will be difficult and it stays because the studio thinks it is part of the charm of the original. Veteran players who have played the original would say otherwise to that though.

Blackman does admit that some people would like that and some would hate it since it is a very polarizing mission. He stated that there are people who actually love the difficulty of this mission, which is why they knew that while going into it and they even tried to replicate it for the players in the classic setting. This means that the modern settings would have easier controls, hopefully.

“A lot of the challenge comes from the fact that racing those types of vehicles is hard,” Haden continues. “It’s counterintuitive because you don’t ever want to open the throttle and simply go as fast as you can, because that sets you up for disaster when a turn comes up. Trying to teach the player how to kind of feather the gas is a challenge. We’re still tuning the big race, and I guarantee we’ll be working on it until the day we ship.”

Yes, there will be an easy-mode for this particular sequence, but Hangar 13 guarantees that players will fail a few times with the default settings.

Mafia: Definitive Edition will launch on Sept. 25 for PlayStation 4, PC, and Xbox One.
