Google Shuts Down Internal Stadia Studios After More Than a Year

Technology company Google has recently announced that they are shutting down the internal Stadia studios after more than a year.

Stadia Makers

Just after 14 months since its launch, all of the internal game development studios will be shut down by Google. Its tech will be offered to third-party publishers.

Stadia General Manager Phil Harrison was the one to confirm the announcement officially. Two of the internal game studios based in Montreal and Los Angeles will be shut down. This will mark the end of their plans for creating flagship exclusive titles.

“Creating best-in-class games from the ground up takes many years and significant investment, and the cost is going up exponentially,” stated Harrison. “Given our focus on building on the proven technology of Stadia as well as deepening our business partnerships, we’ve decided that we will not be investing further in bringing exclusive content from our internal development team SG&E, beyond any near-term planned games.”

According to Harrison, the ones that are affected (mostly developers) will be given other roles in the company. Others will be leaving the company and pursue other opportunities.

Harrison did assure that services will still continue despite shutting down the studios.
