George R. R. Martin’s Involvement with Elden Ring Actually Done Years Ago

Game of Thrones Creator and Writer George R. R. Martin recently spoke with local news station WTTW in an interview and briefly spoke about the upcoming game Elden Ring.

Martin was on a trip to receive an honorary doctorate from his old school, Northwestern’s Medill School of Journalism when he dropped by WTTW for the interview. He clarified his stance on the upcoming game when he was asked about it.

The writer revealed that his involvement with the game was actually over years ago. It did not mean that he was not given any news about it at all though because FromSoftware was diligent in updating him of the latest news. They even gave him designs of the monsters and other characters.

“Actually, it’s considerably different,” Martin stated as he compared his work with game development. “My work on it was actually done years ago. These games, they’re like movies. They take a long time to develop.”

Just like what Game Director Miyazaki Hidetaka said in another interview, Martin’s statement here coincided with his involvement with the game. Here’s his explanation:

Basically they wanted a world created to set the game in. They wanted worldbuilding, as a big factor in fantasy and science fiction.

You’re not only talking about the characters and the plot, the setting is almost as important as everything else. I worked up a fairly detailed background for them, and then they took it from there.

Really, it’s been several years since I’ve last seen them, but they would come in periodically and show me some monsters they’d designed or the latest special effects. The game has been very slowly developing and now it’s coming out in January. I’ll be as excited as anybody else to see it.

Elden Ring launches January 21, 2022 for PlayStation 4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
