A new report has revealed the true nature of the canceled Titanfall game.
According to Giant Bomb reporter Jeff Grubb via VGC, the unannounced Titanfall game codename Titanfall Legends was not a standalone title. It was going to work alongside together with the popular battle royale Apex Legends. He said that it was Respawn Entertainment’s attempt at getting a Titanfall-feeling project inside Apex Legends.
“Titanfall Legends was not Titanfall 3, because in a lot of people’s minds I think Titanfall 3 was going to be a new, standalone game with a single-player campaign and a multiplayer, and they could just never do that again after Apex Legends changed the calculus on all of those things,” he said.
“In two weeks from now Apex Legends is going to get team deathmatch, and that was always part of a plan to turn Apex Legends into this platform where you could get all kinds of different shooter experiences from an expanded Apex Legends / Titanfall world.
“Titanfall Legends was always supposed to slot in as part of that… Titanfall Legends would be a single-player campaign inside of this platform, in the same way Call of Duty works where you get Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone is right there as well.”
Grubb explained that Respawn designed Titanfall Legends to encourage players to use special abilities like wall running and more. The developers did not want players to play it like Call of Duty.
This canceled campaign would have featured Apex Legends characters and BT, the titan companion featured in Titanfall 2’s story. Blisk would be the players’ character and explore the world. They could have also upgraded BT.
Legends would show up in this campaign and then give Blisk special powers. Grubb said this would tie in Apex Legends in a “really strong way.”
“They wanted to make the game more active, where you used your abilities more often… the strapline I heard was, ‘we want to make Jon Wick meets Tony Hawk’. They were also super inspired by Doom Eternal, where you’re always aggressive and always getting stuff.”
Grubb also revealed somewhat the backstory of Titanfall Legends. He claims that Rampart, a character from Apex Legends, discovered the chassis of BT and brought BT back to life. BT is a special titan and has interacted with a special item called The Lost Ark. BT would be the only one who could track all of these items and the one who collects them all will become super powerful.
No official statement from Respawn Entertainment or EA has been released to confirm or deny these claims.
