Tales of Graces f has been remastered for the new generation. The game was originally released for the PS3. I will cover a little bit about what improvements have been made over the original and whether it’s still worth playing in the present or not.
Tales of Graces f follows the story of Asbel, A young prince who decides to become a knight following the events that happened during his childhood. Asbel is a young determined kid who doesn’t like being told what to do. He’s brave and rash and has led him into situations he shouldn’t have been to in the beginning if he only listened. In typical Tales of fashion, the characters in Tales of Graces f have very interesting background stories that you can’t help but want to follow. It reminds me a bit of Tales of Xillia where the protagonists meet each other in a twist of fate and eventually team up to save the world or something.
The game’s graphics has been upscaled to have a much smoother cleaner look from its previous version. However, because the game was made for the PS3. The graphics can seem a little bit outdated and polygonal.
In what seems to be something of a common factor in Remastered versions of games, they added a toggle button to make your character run faster in the overworld. It’s pretty much the same way where in the FFVIII remastered, you can press a button to make things run faster than normal. I do think this is a very useful feature because people nowadays don’t have the time to wait for a video game character to walk.
They have also added an encounter toggle feature so that you can decide whether you want to encounter enemies or not. For those who already know the story of this game but still want to play the game, the game added a skip feature on the cutscenes and skits. Skits are those little dialogue moments that happen in the game that you get to witness happening between the characters of the game, This is also one core element of a Tales game, and for any true fans, you wouldn’t really want to skip over these.
They have also added a new feature called the Grade Shop. The Grade Shop allows you to spend time customizing your gaming experience from the beginning. It includes features like double XP or double items. This is handy because it further enhances your experience with the game and ensures that you play it to your liking. It further ensures the game is suitable to play in this day and age.
The game now also includes a destination icon telling you where the next quest is located and how far you are from it. I find this feature very helpful because of how the game only has a fixed camera view. You can easily get lost wandering in the game if you don’t have an icon telling you where to go. For explorer enthusiasts, this can be distracting but for those who just need that extra help to ensure they power through the game, this is a welcome feature.
Another useful feature that they added to the game is having a retry for regular encounters. Gone are the days when you end up having to go back to the starting point of an encounter. You can now easily retry the battle just by selecting the retry function.
All these new features have made this game a more welcoming game to anyone wanting to dip their toes in the world of Tales Of series. However, I do like that they kept the original music of the game. It adds to the nostalgia factor and it keeps the original atmosphere of the game.
The combat in Tales of Graces f Remastered is a mixture of instant action and commands. Although you can freely move and attack enemies, You are limited by the number of times you can do this. The number of times does refresh in time but it does give that feeling of turn-based games where you have to wait your turn before you can do your next move. It’s like the game couldn’t decide whether it wanted to be turn-based or not. I did wish they just stuck to one kind of gameplay but there’s nothing wrong with being innovative.
Overall, Tales of Graces f Remastered is a good RPG with an interesting story and characters for which you will love to root. If you have not played this game or want to jump into it again, then this is a must-have to add to your list of RPG titles.
