The studio behind The Outlast Trials today rolled out one of its biggest updates yet, headlined by the new Invasion Experimental Therapy, a permanent PvP game mode that invites players to betray, stalk, and butcher one another within the Murkoff facility.
The update, live now on PC and consoles, introduces Invasion, allowing real players—known in-game as Reagents—to become Imposters, infiltrating the Trials through the Sleep Room Terminals. Once inside, Imposters wield only a knife and their wits as they hunt fellow players across the map. Each Imposter must track, stalk, and eliminate Reagents before their time runs out, or face the consequences: electrocution and death if they fail to reach an Insertion Gate before the timer expires.
While Imposters hunt, others wait in the wings, acting as unseen eyes and ears who can ping targets and feed information to teammates. Knife attacks come in two forms: quick slashes that deal steady damage, or stabs—a brutal instant-kill that demands patience and proximity. Imposters can see the noise disturbances that Reagents make, are immune to psychosis gas and Prime Asset effects, but cannot use Reagent items. At the end of each match, Imposters are scored based on their kills, inflicted damage, and survival performance.
To mark the launch of the new season, Red Barrels has released a fresh Season 4.2 gameplay trailer, showcasing the terror, tension, and betrayal of Invasion mode in full swing.
Red Barrels describes this as a “lasting addition” to the game — not just a Halloween event but a permanent mode built into The Outlast Trials going forward.
Alongside Invasion, the update adds two new MK-Challenges: Beguile the Children, where players manipulate subliminal broadcasts to escape, and Investigate the Minotaur, which tasks them with exposing the crimes of a powerful figure known as the Buffalo Minotaur. Both scenarios carry the surreal, corporate horror tone the series is known for.
Halloween brings more than blood this season. Program Geister, a returning limited-time event, is back with its hallucinatory therapy twist. The event runs in two parts — from October 21 to November 4, and again from November 4 to November 18 — and features altered Trials filled with hallucinations, enraged enemies, and hidden player names. Players can earn Event Tokens to unlock cosmetics in the new Geister Limited-Time Catalog, accessible for free during the event window. Unspent tokens will vanish after November 18, but the catalog will later return via the Murkoff Store for those who missed out.
Also arriving with this update is a redesigned in-game store, offering new exclusive outfits, DLC packs, and past catalog content. Players can also claim exclusive Twitch Drops until November 18 by tuning into The Outlast Trials streams.
The Outlast Trials is available now on PC, PlayStation, and Xbox platforms.
