Next Super Smash Bros Game Should Have Roster Reduced Says Sakurai

Masahiro Sakurai, Super Smash Bros series creator, recently talked with media outlet The Verge mostly about Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and what he intends to do IF there will be a next game in the future.

Sakurai was asked what would convince him to come back to make another Smash game and what would have changed if so. He was quick to answer this question as he was already talking about the post-launch content like the DLC fighters and the comparison of what they envisioned of it first and now its complete version.

“I think we’ve reached the limit, at least in terms of volume of content and fighters,” started Sakurai. “Basically, if I were to have the opportunity to work on another Super Smash Bros. game, that means we would have to shrink the roster, but we need to think about whether fans would be pleased about that.”

This holds true as Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has 82 playable characters and it spans from various games all around like RPG, fighting games, adventure, puzzles, and more. To create a new one would need a fresh new roster to make it more appealing to the gamers hence Sakurai’s comment of shrinking the roster for the better.

Sakurai also shared that he has already poured too much of his personality into it. He thinks for this long-time series to continue to still become relevant today, the company needs to think about removing the series’ dependence on just one person’s vision, which is his.

Thank you for your service Masahiro Sakura-san. It is about time that you should relax and watch the future generations do new work instead of relying on you all the time.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is now available exclusively on Nintendo Switch.
