Hangar 13 says no PS5 and Xbox Series X version of Mafia: Definitive Edition, but it’s “forward-compatible”.

With the official gameplay reveal of the upcoming remake of 2002’s Mafia, fans all over the globe are excited for its worldwide release on PS4, Xbox One, and PC on September 25.

Speaking to Hangar 13’s President and Chief Creative Officer, Haden Blackman, in an interview, we took the chance to ask about the possibility of the studio taking advantage of the hardware capabilities that PS5 and Xbox Series X has to offer.

“There’s nothing we can talk about that yet; not in what we can announce or discuss. We want to see the Mafia series on as many platforms as humanly possible,” Haden said. “That will depend on the Definitive Edition’s success and whether or not there’s a need for the game to be updated again. We’ll make sure that the game is forward-compatible – as required by the console manufacturers.”

Microsoft’s Xbox Series X features Smart Delivery, where the majority of the games can be playable on its upcoming next-generation Xbox. Sony also adapts the same concept that they require some studios to have their upcoming PS4 games compatible with the PS5.

Haden also added: “But, in general, we have no plans that we can announce at this point, in specific, for next-gen editions.”

This means the upcoming PS4 and Xbox One versions of Mafia: Definitive Edition will hopefully be playable on PS5 and Xbox Series X, but not a particular re-release edition that’s specifically developed for next-gen. There will be improved load-times and texture pop-ins with the use of SSD, that’s it.

Here’s the 4K gameplay reveal of Mafia: Definitive Edition and it looks great!
