Ed Boon has recently released a new Mortal Kombat teaser that suggests a full franchise reboot.
Mortal Kombat creator Ed Boon has recently shared a new short clip on his personal Twitter account. In it is a clock slowly counting down the hours from 9 to 10 to 11. For fans of the Mortal Kombat series, this will immediately let them know that these numbers represent the newest titles with the latest MK11. As it lands on 11, it seems to have glitched and then it quickly bypasses the 12 and instead jumps straight to 1. Very strange.
So what does this all mean? It is clear that NetherRealm Studios is going to bypass calling the next game Mortal Kombat 12 and instead fully reboot the whole franchise again and start from the beginning, the story basically. For those who have not played Mortal Kombat 11 Aftermath, turn back now because the next paragraph contains SPOILERS.
At the end of the Aftermath expansion, if the story canon is going to be based on Liu Kang’s ending, the new god of thunder and fire has rebooted time. He meets up with Kung Lao’s ancestor in the past and trains him to become the first champion of Mortal Kombat. Based on that, it is possible that the next Mortal Kombat game will include the first Kung Lao and his story with a rebooted MK universe. It might also include familiar faces but in their younger forms way back in the Mortal Kombat 1 era.
Ed Boon has not shared any other clues for this new Twitter post, but the announcement could be near since he is slowly sharing some hints. Stay tuned for more.
