PlayStation 5 Generation Promised to Have More Exclusive Software

Sony Interactive Entertainment President and CEO Jim Ryan assured everyone that the game company is going to invest more on exclusive software for the PlayStation 5 generation.

Ryan’s interview with Japanese magazine Nikkei was recently posted on the official website (behind a paywall) where he talked about the ongoing competition with Microsoft. He also noted how their competition is acquiring various studios from left to right.

    Here’s a translation via ResetEra:

We have been quietly, but steadily investing in high-quality games for PlayStation. And we will make sure the PlayStation 5 generation has more exclusive software than ever before. We have engaged in mergers and acquisitions several times in the past, such as with Insomniac Games. We will not rule out that option in the future.

The SIE CEO also discussed the PS5 supply shortages in Japan. He pointed out that the supply for it was “extremely intricate” under the pandemic and the distribution of the units were only handled online. He also reasoned out that the semiconductor supply and demand is now tight than ever around the globe and the PS5 needs such materials for production. He even asks the suppliers to increase production of such materials.

Ryan then discussed about how the PS5 has a lot of software made by Japanese developers. Moving forward, he wants to “strengthen our ties with Japanese developers and release content for PlayStation 5 suited to the Japanese market.”

A prediction was made at the end by Ryan. He said that while sales usually peak in the third or fourth year of a console’s lifetime, he can see a longer lifecycle for the PS5. He thinks that this is due to its “health post-launch” and is more optimistic compared last year.
