PlayStation has temporarily suspended its advertising on Facebook and Instagram to join other companies in support of a boycott campaign.
The campaign is called #StopHateforProfit on social media. It is to boycott the social media companies’ inaction on addressing hate speech and other forms of offensive content. PlayStation joins others companies like Microsoft to pressure them to do more effective action on mitigating hate speech on the platform.
A representative has stated that the company has globally suspended their Facebook and Instagram activity, including advertising and non-paid content, until the end of July. This was done in order to stand for working and playing together for good.
Other big companies have also halted their advertisement on Facebook including big major brands like Honda, Coca-Cola, and more. The campaign’s goal is to address social media’s proliferation of content that spreads hateful messaging and misinformation.
