Sony Backtracks on PSN Account Linking for PC, starting with Marvel’s Spider-Man 2

PC players rejoice! Today, the SVP Head of Publishing from Sony Interactive Entertainment, Asad Qizilbash, shared on PlayStation Blog that the company will incentivize those players who are willing to link their PlayStation Network accounts on PC, starting with Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, which is set to release tomorrow on January 30, 2025.

“Starting with tomorrow’s release of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 for PC, we’re working to add more benefits to playing with an account for PlayStation Network,” says Qizilbash in a blog post. “The Last of Us Part II Remastered (coming April 3, 2025), in addition to God of War Ragnarök and Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered, will all soon be adding in-game content unlocks for PlayStation Network account users.”

“An account for PlayStation Network will become optional for these titles on PC,” he continued. This means players will not be forced to link their PSN accounts in games like Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, God of War Ragnarok, Horizon: Zero Dawn Remastered, and the upcoming The Last of Us Part II Remastered, which is set to release on April 3, 2025, on PC.

If you opt to link your PSN account, aside from the added benefits like trophies and friend management, you’ll get the following content for each of the mentioned games above.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2Early unlock suits: the Spider-Man 2099 Black Suit and the Miles Morales 2099 Suit
God of War RagnarokGain access to the Armor of the Black Bear set for Kratos at the first Lost Items chest in the Realm Between Realms (previously only accessible in a New Game+ run) and a resource bundle (500 Hacksilver and 250 XP)
The Last of Us Part II Remastered+50 points to activate bonus features and unlock extras

Jordan’s Jacket from Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet as a skin for Ellie
Horizon Zero Dawn RemasteredGain access to Nora Valiant outfit

The ordeal requiring PC gamers to link a PSN account started with Helldivers 2 in 2024. The community strongly disagreed with the new policy set by Sony and retaliated by review bombing of Helldivers 2 on Steam. This pushed Sony to change its tactics and make account linking optional.

However, Sony also made all of its published games, starting with Ghost of Tsushima, on PC unavailable to countries that do not have PSN support such as the Philippines and Vietnam in Southeast Asia. There are about 121 countries in the world that do not have PSN support.

It’s unclear if Sony has decided to fully make PSN account linking optional or are they testing this to know how the community would react? If they do decide to keep it optional, when will Sony make their games on PC available again to those countries without PSN support? It’s a mystery at this point, but if PSN account linking really becomes optional, then they should make the games available again to those countries affected.
