VR and AR Market Currently Too Small for Xbox It Claims

It still needs to reach a milestone before they could talk about getting into the VR/AR market.

Xbox Game Studios Head Matt Booty says Xbox games that it needs to reach 10 million players to be successful.

Booty recently spoke in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter to state that Xbox Games need to reach around 10 million players to make it successful.

VR AR Market Still Not Priority

“I think for us, it’s just a bit of wait until there’s an audience there,” he said. “We’re very fortunate that we have got these big IPs that have turned into ongoing franchises with big communities.

“We have 10 games that have achieved over 10 million players life-to-date, which is a pretty big accomplishment, but that’s the kind of scale that we need to see success for the game and it’s just, it’s not quite there yet with AR, VR.”

Xbox Chief Phil Spencer got bad criticism way back in November 2019 when he commented about the VR platform. Some think that his statement felt like he was being dismissive of the technology. He called it niche and isolating which does not fit with his vision of gaming which is a communal pastime. He claims that when it came to customer feedback, none of the customers are asking for VR.

Spencer did clarify later that he does love that the games industry is pioneering in different fields. It is just that VR is not their focus. It seems later on, Xbox still continues to not get involved with VR and focus more on their games.
