Game company Microsoft recently made a statement in regards to Xbox Live Gold rumors.
The game company revealed that they are not planning to discontinue the subscription service. They are not even planning to rename the Xbox live service and will stay as it is.
A spokesperson from Microsoft told The Verge this statement:
The update to ‘Xbox online service’ in the Microsoft Services Agreement refers to the underlying Xbox service that includes features like cross-saves and friend requests. This language update is intended to distinguish that underlying service, and the paid Xbox Live Gold subscription. There are no changes being made to the experience of the service or Xbox Live Gold.
When asked about the rumors about Xbox Live Gold going away or being made free:
We have no plans to discontinue Xbox Live Gold at this time. It is an important part of gaming on Xbox today, and will continue to be in the future.
The key phrase there is “at this time.” This could mean that Xbox Live Gold could become free in the future, just not right now.
