Summer, the time when youth shines at its brightest. The sun, the beach, no classes, video games and a new seasonal batch of anime to look forward to. This will be Sirus Gaming’s first post about anime so let’s take a look at the upcoming anime for the summer of 2017.
This season has a lot of promise by kicking off with a new entry in the prominent Fate series, Fate/Apocrypha, which is either a prequel or spin-off adaptation. Then we have the sequels with a new game + mode in the moe working in the game industry anime, New Game!!, also another dose of literary and artistic genius with Owarimonogatari 2nd Season, then with the return of some familiar faces from hell and back with Hell Girl and Saiyuuki Reload Blast, and lastly topping off the sequels with some Senki Zesshou Symphogear AXZ for those with a desire for an action and musical pack whirlwind.
The new ones also show some promise like the conspiracy in the holy city in Vatican Kiseki Chousakan, the high school gambling-centric Kakegurui, and the intriguing Dive!!. This is also season for reinvigoration or in the anime realm, reincarnation would sound better since we get three “isekai” adaptations with a mecha in Knight’s & Magic, a restaurant in Isekai Shokudou, and a smartphone in Isekai wa Smartphone to Tomo ni. Also we have a possible sleeper with Reflection since Stan Lee is back in the anime industry. So let’s enjoy this summer to the fullest and not just play video games but also enjoy some anime.
The format for this will be divided into 2 paragraphs and an expectations level. It will start with a personal but brief understanding of its premise and what the writer’s take on it will be going forward as well as stating any point of interest present.

Disclaimer 3: This list does not hold every anime airing this season since we only have picked those that show potential to recommend to the greater audience as well as lacking the manpower to do everything and we stray away from those that look too concentrated on a specific target audience like those for children.

Fate/Apocrypha

Genres: Action, Historical, Supernatural, Drama, Magic, Fantasy
Premiere Date: July 1, 2017

Another entry into the ever popular Fate franchise is Fate/Apocrypha. Set in a parallel world from the original Fate/Stay Night, the series begins after the events of the 3rd Holy Grail War, instead of the 4th and 5th Grail War in Fate/Zero and Fate/Stay Night respectively. After years of absence in the Holy Grail Wars the Yggdmillenia family of Magi secedes from the Mage’s association and announce that the Grail is in their possession. In response 50 mages are dispatched from the Mage’s Association and all but 1 are killed by a mysterious servant. The last surviving mage activates the Grail’s hidden system which summons 14 servants that starts The Great Holy Grail War. Due to the grand scale of this event, the grail enters the fray and summons its own servant, Ruler, to mediate the conflict between the Black Faction (Yggdmillenia) and the Red Faction (the Mage’s Association).
The Fate franchise is getting even more popular with the new upcoming adaptation and the launch of Fate/Grand Order in the North American continent. We will finally see Ruler which has already made a cameo appearance in Fate/Zero. The Grail War has never been on a scale as grand as this and for those Illya fans, sorry but this isn’t a mahou shoujo spin-off. What’s surprising is that the series is being produced by A-1 Pictures and not Ufotable, who are probably busy with the Heaven’s Feel trilogy. This series will definitely be worth a watch whether or not you’re a fan of the franchise, a nasuverse addict or just want to see Ruler or other historical figures with superpowers in a team battle royale.

Saiyuki Reload Blast

Studio: Platinumvision
Genres: Action, Adventure, Comedy, Supernatural, Drama, Josei
Premiere Date: July 5, 2017
Information Links: MyAnimeList, Wikipedia
The title says it all, it’s really a blast to the past for the fans of old. They’re back and they’re looking better than ever. Saiyuuki is loosely based off of the famous ancient Chinese literature, Journey to the West. If you’re still not familiar one of the characters goes by the name Son Goku, no not the guy who has a Spirit Bomb, the original Son Goku. It’s premise is simple, in the realm of Toungenkyou, humans and youkai (demons) live in peace. Then everything changed when the youkai attacked! It turns out someone is trying to unseal an evil demon lord via forbidden techniques, which causes the youkai to go mad. And of course it’s all going on in the west. The monk Genjou Sanzo must ban with his friends and find the reason for this insanity, while facing off against demons from every angle along the way. Now they have finally arrived in India and must face trials they have not foreseen.
Saiyuuki is pretty much the original bishounen boyband on a roadtrip quest before Prince Noctis and his kingsguard became that. True their car does not aesthetically compare to the regalia but it can also fly (when it transforms to its true form though). The art is so stylish and so fitting with the Josei (for older women) genre. All 4 characters are bada** and pretty as hell that its no wonder this series had so many adaptations like OVAs, movies, TV anime, and musicals. For those who are unfamiliar with the series I suggest watching the previous anime adaptations to understand whats going to go down in this adaptation. Most of the cast is new with some old voices returning. I can only pray this adaptation can live up to its predecessors with its dark ancient Chinese folklore, and old-school action.

Owarimonogatari 2nd Season

Premiere Date: August 12, 2017, ???

Another chapter in the critically acclaimed text heavy Monogatari series. Not much information is shown yet for this anime and there isn’t even a truly set premiere date or airing schedule but without a doubt the fans can’t wait to see some more of this cast of word play masters, head tilters, and supernatural magnets.
Since the 2nd season of 1 part of this huge series lacks any proper information to give out I’ll just do a brief take on the whole series. So one minute the guy’s fighting his blood-related sister in the city on the level of draconic carnage, the next he’s brushing her teeth in an innocent yet couldn’t be more erotic way possible. That’s what can happen in this series. The anime adaptation of the series is certainly like watching a novel with the amount of text there is and its main theme is about the supernatural beings and phenomenons about them and it is definitely not for everyone and for those who are willing to give it a shot, though its action , it will take some getting used to. But once you get used to it, the series is definitely a beautifully crafted literary masterpiece, not to mention its action is rare but epic and artistic. So I would definitely say that for those unfamiliar with the series you will need to watch the other iterations to grasp this new season.

The life of the wealthy seems to be filled with nothing but boredom, since everything is given to them at their whim and they have no need to worry about danger with the security given to them. Hyakkaou Private Academy gives the sons and daughters of those rich bastards a twist though, a curriculum of gambling is their answer. No longer do they need to worry about being smart or athletic, they just need to learn how to read their opponents, play mind games, push the rules to the grey areas, make alliances, and manipulate them to to where they need to be to finally crush them. Gambling is addictive and mad sport, and Yumeko Jabami is the personification of addiction and madness.
Gambling is a dark abyss that only few can crawl out of, like in Kaiji. But what happens when it’s the youths that rule that dark abyss? It seems this will be the most interesting series to watch out for this season. A cast full of sociopaths was not what I was expecting going in to enjoy the summertime fun. It looks like we’ll be in for a ride to see which ones of the lesser evils to root for.

New game is about a girl named Suzukaze Aoba, who recently graduated high school and got her dream job of working in the video game industry. She not only gets to do what she’s best at with 3D modeling and graphic designing but her senpai is her very own idol, Yagami Kou, and they’re working on the sequel to her favorite series to boot, Fairies Story. That’s about it for season 1. Now a new game+ mode is happening with her and the cast back in business with more moe in the working of video game development as the girls in the Eagle Jump studio work overtime together for us to watch them do cute things.
If you’re not a fan of moe or relaxing anime then this show is not catered to you. It’s just cute girls doing some cute work-related (and not work-related) things with a side of yuri for the sharp ones. You’ll get a glimpse of how video games are developed in a very light, sweet and fluffy way. Everyone of the cast is returning which makes season 2 a treat to watch.

Mizuki is a school that has one of the rarest sports clubs I’ve seen, Diving. Before closing down the club gets a new coach and manages to persuade the club’s parent company to let them stay active, which they did. Now here’s the catch, they need to have one of their members be able to participate in next year’s Olympics as part of the Japanese Olympic team.
Talk about hard to please, the t is just too damn high. Although this anime does look promising since it is one of the rare adaptations where the source is from a novel back in 2000-2002. Hopefully we’ll see the drive to become stronger after losing and whether or not this sport has any teamwork. If nothing else this could be a good fanservice for girls like Free! or we can learn some things about diving like Amanchu! So this should be on the to watch list for sports anime junkies since this is probably the only sports anime that has an element of summer, water.

Jigoku Shoujo also known as Hell Girl is back after nearly a decade of silence since 2009 with a 4th season. Hell Girl usually starts out with those poor souls that were tormented enough that they would access a certain website where they can exact revenge on their tormentors at the price of taking a one way trip to hell.
It is a surprise that this aged anime is getting a 4th season which is a feat so rare in the industry nowadays, the only catch is that there’s only 6 episodes. Studio DEEN is doing the anime again and they’re bringing back all the old seiyuu’s with them as well as Takahiro Omori, the director of the 1st 2 Hell Girl adaptations. Himeno and her friends try to fit in and just have fun with their high school life, co-existing with all the other races and just living relatively normal lives.
A slice of life monster anime is something you don’t see everyday, even more so since its being produced by the only Chinese owned studio in Japan, Haoliners Animation. Not that its a bad thing, I personally welcome this series but whether or not its a hit or miss we’ll just have to see. There is a lot that this series can possibly offer us, how it approaches the supernatural monster girl aspect of society and its integration to the perceived tone will be the key to how well this series goes. The premise is promising and I’m looking forward to watching how this show turns out.

The Silhouette Knights are mechas than need magic to operate and only pilots approved by the academy can pilot them. So join Ernesti and his pals as they dream to become Knight Runners.
This is probably the isekai version of Broken Blade, a series that also needed magic to pilot the mechas. I just hope that magic is more prominent and flashy here compared to Broken Blade since it was really lackluster in every aspect. This new series does show some promise and might even create mechas that can bend the laws of physics, maybe even more so than Aquarion. Though it shows promise, the whole premise reeks of generic stench. However this might just be the surprise of the season so it is probably worth it to keep your eyes open for this one.

Touya Mochizuki was just your ordinary high school guy. Then God accidentally killed him, so no one is perfect apparently. As an apology he gives him the chance to be reborn in a fantasy world and can pick one item to bring with him on his new lease on life. Touya decided his smartphone would be his Aqua-sama. While he can’t use call anyone or use data he has what fantasy worlds lack, 21st century technology, that can pretty much make you a god, provided you can find an outlet or a solar power bank.
So yeah another Isekai anime joins the mix, eventually “isekai” should become a genre at this rate. It all looks generic in general but fantasy, adventure anime’s are my bread and butter and it’s always fun to see what happens when you bring technology into different era’s or realms that are unfamiliar with it. Since Touya is godlike of course he also gets a harem, atleast they have what KonoSuba doesn’t currently have. So it’s all up to how this anime can deliver and develop its characters.

Music fills the air, bodies move about in a graceful and energetic manner, coordinating with their partners and move in tune to the harmony and chaos. Behold, the summer season presents thee with what is probably the 1st competitive sports dancing anime to have ever existed, Welcome to the Ballroom. A professional dancer named Sengoku meets Tatara, an introverted middle school student, and like fate, rescues him from bullies. After the encounter, Tatara ends up in Sengoku’s dance studio and decides to change his image. Thus begins his journey of competitive ballroom dancing as he sweeps the dance halls with the potential Sengoku saw in him.
Now this was probably long overdue in the sports genre, a dance sport anime. True it may not be what most people would have expected but it is certainly one we have yet to see unless idol dancing counts. There is so much that this adaptation has going for it and will definitely be worth the watch. While the plot summary in itself sounds ludicrous and over-the-top, the anime is worth checking out for its style alone. The artstyle is reminiscent to that of Fate/Stay Night Unlimited Blade Works that aired around 2014 and promises action that is just as fluid as that show. Little is actually revealed about the overall story, but for those who are a fan of anime centered around samurai action such as RurouniKenshin or Sword of the Stranger, then Katsugeki/Touken Ranbu is worth checking out.

In the town just at the edge of the Abyss, an orphan girl named Rico dreams of following her mother’s footsteps and become a Cave Raider. One day, while she was exploring the depths of the Abyss, she finds a young boy who turns out to be a robot.
Despite how the premise may sound, Made in the Abyss is actually quite a dark fantasy. It has some pretty open gore along with unapologetic images of nudity. The premise of two children venturing into a dangerous environment filled with terrifying creatures seems like quite the bold setting. That aside, the anime itself seems like it’s going to be filled with amazing imagery in the scenery when it’s not being dark. It would certainly be interesting to see what the Abyss cave has to offer for its audience.

This story follows to men who are investigators for the Assembly of Saints, Hiraga Josef Kō and Robert Nicholas. They are also prodigies in their field with the latter excelling in cryptanalysis and the latter being a genius scientist. Together, they uncover the mysteries of miracle claims all around.
An anime centered around Christian history may seem more like a documentary than an actual story, but this anime seems to have more in common with mystery anime centering around detectives. The anime seems to pay homage to real life history, as the Vatican really did (and still does) investigate miracles happening all around the globe. He is running out of time and he needs to hunt down said demon quickly before he is all out. That’s not all, Victor’s memories are also slowly disappearing and his age reversing as the consequences of this contract. Along with his partner Kiri, he needs to fight demons to ensure that no one else makes the same mistake he did.
A high stakes anime is certainly a welcome addition to the fold. The premise is certainly interesting dealing with demons and the likes. We look forward to how our protagonist deals with his current predicament and that he doesn’t have all the time in the world to stop the villains. We expect that tensions will rise as the clock ticks for our protagonist.

Overall Sum of Things :
There are only a few shows that has us really hyped for and they’re mainly sequels. The summer season is supposed to be a refreshing break from the mundane anyway, especially for the younger generations so that could be one indication why we have a lot of new adaptations versus the ones from established series. Still this season has a lot of potential to offer and could runaway with some sleeper hits here and there. It’s definitely a season to watch out for cause literally anything goes in anime.
