The Tournaments Update Is The Biggest Rocket League Update

The Tournaments Update for Rocket League is now live on all platforms! In addition to the highly-anticipated addition of the Tournaments feature, this update also introduces a number of other improvements and a huge improvement for the Nintendo Switch version.

The Nintendo Switch version update improves performance and visual quality. The resolution for handheld mode has been tuned up from 1024×576 to 1280×720 (720p); on dock mode, the Tournament update boosts the resolution from 720p to 900p. In this new update, Nintendo Switch players will gain access to the Video Quality option for them to choose between Quality and Performance modes. The Performance mode is going to hit 60 frames per second for both dock and handheld mode, and the Quality mode will stick to 30 frames per second in favor for eye-candy visuals.

In the ever-growing Rocket League community, Psyonix decided to add Connection Quality Info icons that let the players know the status of their connectivity while playing in a game.

  • Server Health: When the server itself is experiencing issues, like eating up too much memory
  • Packet Loss: Data being transferred between you and the server is lost
  • Latency Variance: When your ping isn’t holding steady, typically fluctuating 40ms-60ms
  • High Latency: Commonly known as “lag,” usually indicated by a high ping to the server

Aside from the connectivity icon status add-on, Psyonix has been looking into player engagements and it seems that for most players, especially on Steam, chats can get pretty out of hand when engaged in heat conversations. This led the studio to add the all-new Chat Ban system. “Chat Bans are as simple as they sound — removing a player’s ability to chat while in a match. The conduct that leads to a Chat Ban is the same kind of behavior that currently leads to a Game Ban. The Language Ban system we use to target the use of racial, gender and homophobic slurs, as well as some more general inappropriate language, is being tied to the Chat Ban system as well.” according to Psyonix from their post about the new feature.

Further things that have been improved and added in the Tournament Update are new item stacking, filtering, searching, and sorting options. There are crowd audio improvements and the ability to play the soundtrack music during online and offline matches. And the new Import Battle-Car – Samurai is now available as a limited-drop from the Triumph Crate.

Rocket League is now available on PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.
