Sea of Stars Fishing Guide: How to Catch Fish

Sea of Stars has a fishing minigame where you can catch as many fish as you want in order to get ingredients for food. It isn’t mandatory but it can be a fun and fulfilling experience. Here’s a guide we made that teaches you how to fish in Sea of Stars.

How to Catch Fish in Sea of Stars?

Here are the steps to catch fish in Sea of Stars:

    • Step 1: Go to the edge of a fishing lake and press the interact button (Space, X, or A) to cast your line. This will throw the bobber airborne forward which you can move left and right.
    • Step 2: Press the interact button once more to kick the bobber into the water where the most fish silhouettes are.
    • Step 3: Once a fish bites the bobber, use the left and right buttons to resist its pull. Move in the opposite direction of where its swimming.
    • Step 4: Reel the fish in with the interact button until it reaches the edge of the fishing lake.
    • Step 5: Choose to cook the fish or release.

Cooking the fish adds ingredients into your inventory which you can use to cook into food that heals your party members. On the other hand, you can choose to release it which doesn’t do anything. It’s more useful to turn fish into Fillet so you can use the ingredients to cook food in the Campfire.

Be careful not to break the fishing line by reeling in too much. This is indicated by your line turning red. A particularly useful tip is to wait until the fish jumps above water. The moment it does this, press the interact button to reel the line in. This stuns the fish so you can keep reeling it in without it resisting until it reaches the edge of the fishing lake.

Not every fish will jump above water so you can’t always rely on that tactic. However most do. You can see the type of fish you catch on the fishing lake by the shapes of their silhouettes moving under the waters.

There are 23 different fish types in Sea of Stars. Catching all fish species at least once is a requirement for the Master Angler trophy. If you’re aiming to get all the Sea of Stars trophies and platinum the game, you’re going to want to make a stop in every fishing lake you come across in the open world.

Don’t worry if you forget how to fish. By pausing the game and heading into How to Play, you can find a guide for fishing under Survival. The thing is, Sea of Stars doesn’t tell you this so you may miss it.
