Follow the Retreated Root is an objective that is part of the Explore the Ocean quest in Coral Island. After cleaning a significant part of the ocean, players will have to find the source of the sickness by following the blackened roots as they retreat back to where they came from. How to complete the ‘Follow the Retreated Root’ objective
As you clean up the coral sites, you’ll notice that the roots will gradually recede and open up new areas. If you happen to get stuck in the south part of the ocean, look for a ledge in the southwest area that is made up of orange coral that cascades like stairs. You will eventually clean up all the 20 coral sites on the lower section of the ocean, and then all you need to do is follow the roots as they retreat further back.
You will also meet up with two merfolk who are surprised at how you manage to make the roots and goo disappear. You will see more of them later on once you reach the kingdom.
Keep following the retreating roots, and you will end up at the door to the Merfolk Kingdom, which updates the objective of the quest to the new one.
