Square Enix has recently stated that the launch sales of Forspoken were “lackluster”.
The big game company has admitted that the early sales of Forspoken have been quite disappointing. When it launched on January 24, 2023, it had very low scores and reviews were not looking good. It even had a slightly above-average score on Metacritic for PS5 and PC.
Square Enix President Yosuke Matsuda spoke during a financial results briefing last February 3, 2023 talking about the sales. He says that the launch sales of the game had been lackluster following “challenging” reviews.
“However, the game has also received positive feedback on its action features, including its parkour and combat capabilities, so it has yielded results that will lead to improvement of our development capabilities of other games in the future,” he said to the investors during the briefing.
“That said, its sales have been lackluster, and while the performance of new titles with February and March release dates will be the ultimate determinant, we see considerable downside risk to our FY2023/3 earnings.”
When Forspoken launched, another title was released as well, which was Tango Gameworks awesome game Hi-Fi Rush. While Forspoken tanked on launch, Hi-Fi Rush earned a lot of praise from players and critics alike. It was quite a conundrum for Square Enix after their highly promoted title was defeated by a game that was shadow dropped during a showcase. We scored Forspoken with an above average score of 6.
Forspoken is out now on PS5 and PC.
