Salt is one of the equipment in Phasmophobia that you can take with you during contracts. This simple tool can have several significant effects against the ghost, which makes it very useful in the hands of professional ghost hunters. In this guide, I’ll be teaching you how to use the Salt in Phasmophobia.

What Does Salt Do in Phasmophobia?

Salt is used to place salt piles on the ground which the ghost may step on. This is used for gathering Ultraviolet evidence, obtaining photo rewards, or keeping certain ghosts from leaving an area.

How to Get Salt in Phasmophobia

You have to be Level 9 in order to unlock Salt and add it to your Loadout. You can purchase it from the Equipment Store back at the lobby.

How Much Does Salt Cost in Phasmophobia?

Salt costs $15 per purchase and will always remain the same price regardless of the tier you’re using.

    Phasmophobia Salt Tiers and Effects

    Salt tiers - Phasmophobia
    • Tier I — A regular can of Salt made by the Ghost Huntin’ Distrubution team.
    • Tier II — Lets you place longer piles of salt, increasing the odds that the ghost may step on it.
    • Tier III — Prevents ghosts from roaming and even slows them down during ghost hunts.

You’ll be presented with the option to Prestige once you reach Level 100. Doing so will reset your progress back to tier I for all equipment including Salt.

How to Upgrade Salt in Phasmophobia

You can upgrade Salt by reaching higher levels and the making a one-time purchase for an upgrade in the Equipment Store.

    • Tier II Upgrade — Unlocked at Level 43 and costs $2,500
    • Tier III Upgrade — Unlocked at Level 68 and costs $5,000

After upgrading the Salt, you can select what tier to bring with you by going to the Equipment Store, your Loadout, and clicking on the Salt. You’ll be able to choose what to bring from the tiers you’ve unlocked.

How to Use Salt in Phasmophobia

With Salt equipped, press the F key on your keyboard to leave salt piles on the ground. When the ghost steps on a salt pile, they will leave a footprint in the center. In the next few seconds, the ghost will leave temporary footprints if they produce Ultraviolet evidence.

Players will be able to step on the salt pile and not affect it in any way. Only the ghost can leave an indent on salt piles that you place. When a salt pile has a footprint in the middle, then the ghost definitely stepped on it.

Footprint on Salt Pile - Phasmophobia

Tier I and Tier II don’t have any special properties aside from the size of the salt piles they let you make. Tier I only lets you leave small, circular salt on the ground. Tier II lets you leave a long trail of pink salt where there’s a higher chance of the ghost stepping on it.

Tier III Salt Piles behave like Tier II, in that you can leave a trail of salt that’s easier for the ghost to step on. Though the Tier III also affects the ghost by slowing its speed for 2 seconds which is useful for when it’s hunting. When it’s not hunting and it steps on the Tier III salt pile, it will stop roaming and go back to its favorite room.

It should be noted that while most ghost are affected by Salt, Wraiths will ignore it entirely. So the Tier III effects will not be applicable to it.
