Sony Interactive Entertainment has recently sent an email in regards to the changes to the PlayStation Plus including a confirmation of how to upgrade to a higher tier.
In a recent official email that was sent to PlayStation Plus members, SIE reminds everyone that the membership will be changing on May 23, 2022 (Asia). It also confirmed the three different membership options to choose from which are PS Plus Essential, PS Plus Extra, and PS Plus Deluxe (Premium).
Aside from the usual reminders like the automatic migration into an equivalent subscription plan, keeping any stacked subscription period that got paid for, and enjoying the same membership benefits until it expires, there is one tidbit that got added.
PlayStation Plus: What Detail Got Added?
There is a detail that members might find quite beneficial if they plan to upgrade to a higher PS Plus tier. According to the email, “You can easily upgrade to a higher benefits plan at any time. To do so, you’ll need to pay the difference between your current plan and your new plan, adjusted for the remaining time of your subscription.”
This means members only need to pay the price of the new plan you are planning to upgrade to then subtract the price of your current plan. Example: PS Plus Extra 12 months $99.99 minus PS Plus 12 months (No matter the months remaining) $59.99 equals $40. You only need to pay $40 to upgrade to PS Plus Extra and not the full price tag that is stated on the pricing list that can be read here.
PS Plus Assurances and PS3 and PS Vita PS Plus Subscriptions
The email also assured everyone that the subscription fee will not be increased and the payment dates will not change when this new service arrives. For the PS3 and PS Vita owners, they cannot buy a new subscription directly on those platforms. They can still buy a subscription on PC, mobile, PS4, or PS5 though.
PS Plus Tier Upgrade Does Not Change Remaining Months
Hopefully this eases the worries of PS Plus members who thought they would be paying for the full price of the new subscription tier even if they just want to upgrade. Unfortunately, the months remaining will not be changed when they decide to upgrade so choose wisely.

Here are the new PS Plus tiers with their benefits:
PlayStation Plus Essential
Provides the same benefits that PlayStation Plus members are getting today, such as:
• Monthly downloadable games
• Exclusive discounts
• Cloud storage for saved games
• Online multiplayer access
There are no changes for existing PlayStation Plus members in this membership plan.
PlayStation Plus Extra
Provides all the benefits from the Essential tier plus a catalogue of up to 400 of the most enjoyable PS4 and PS5 games, including:
• Death Stranding
• God of War
• Mortal Kombat 11
• Returnal
• Marvel’s Spider-Man
• Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales
PlayStation Plus Deluxe
• Provides all the benefits from Essential and Extra tiers
• Adds a catalogue of beloved classic games available to download from the original PlayStation, PS2 and PSP generations.
• Time-limited game trials will also be offered in this tier, so customers can try select games before they buy.
