Sony Interactive Entertainment shares good news of its upcoming first major update for its latest console, the PlayStation 5, tomorrow. Users can expect improvements, stability, and more features available for PS5 owners.
A major note in this newest firmware upgrade is its ‘extended storage’ for PS5 games. While the SSD expansion slot will be activated sometime this summer, tomorrow’s update is only going to store PS5 games but users are not able to play it. They have to transfer the game back to the internal SSD to play according to the PlayStation Blog update:
“With this feature, you can now transfer your PS5 games to USB extended storage from your console’s internal storage. It’s a great way to extend the storage capabilities of your PS5 console, and you can seamlessly copy your PS5 games back to the console’s internal storage when you’re ready to play. It is faster to reinstall PS5 games from USB extended storage than to re-download or copy them from a disc.”
It’s a given fact that PS5 games require an NVMe.2 SSD since these games were developed to make use of its ultra-high-speed capabilities, so playing it on a regular extended hard drive disk (HDD) will make it deem incompatible.
“Because PS5 games are designed to take advantage of the console’s ultra-high-speed SSD, PS5 titles can’t be played from USB extended storage. PS5 titles also cannot be directly downloaded to USB extended storage. However, games that you transfer or copy back to internal storage will automatically update when applicable. In addition, you can select which game modes you want to install (such as campaign or multiplayer) for select titles that support the option.”
In addition, there’s a big update on Share Play. Users are now available to do “cross-generation” Share Play that lets PS4 users play PS5 games of their friends through this feature; you may even play co-op games through Share Play as well if you like.

PlayStation 5 (PS5) is already available, but its lack of stocks makes it difficult for players to get their hands on due to scalpers.
