Arkane has now revealed that Redfall was actually developed for PS5 originally but Microsoft made them change their minds.
Arkane Austin Studio Director Harvey Smith confirmed that they actually had plans for a PS5 release but they were canceled. This happened after Microsoft acquired Bethesda’s parent company ZeniMax Media.
Smith told IGN France that after Microsoft acquired the studio they came in and wanted a change of plans. “… they said ‘No PlayStation 5, we’re focusing on Xbox, PC, and the Game Pass.”
The studio director thinks it was a good decision that Microsoft ordered them to drop the PS5 version. It would help them support Game Pass and have one less platform to worry about. “One less complexity,” Smith said.
“Game Pass has a ton of players, it could become our biggest game thanks to 30 million, where I can’t remember the exact number, of subscribers.”
Redfall launches on May 2, 2023 on PC, and Xbox Series X/S.
