Phil Spencer Responds to Fans: Exclusives, Xbox One X, and Backwards Compatibility

It seems that the head of Xbox, Phil Spencer, is replying to fan questions frequently now. With the feedback about the lack of exclusives and Xbox One X, Phil thinks it’s time for him to join in than having Mike Ybarra and Aaron Greenberg do all the answering.

When we talk about console exclusives, Xbox is heavily empty in this department. Spencer said that “When we have games to show where we are confident in quality and date.” By solely understanding this Twitter reply, it doesn’t really give out any concrete meaning if they are working on any Xbox exclusives aside from their current lineup of Gears, Halo, and Forza.

Xbox One X has just been announced at E3. It was heavily advertised to be the most powerful console and that it will also get a stable of 60FPS for every multi-platform game (non-4K). He responded that it’s up to the developers. “Fps/res are choices studios make, we build platform with capability. If gamers love 60 fps, best vote is to buy 60 fps games.”

Phil also iterated that the original Xbox backward compatible games will not support wide-screen as most of them didn’t get this function. “Fairly separate efforts. BC team gets stretched across OG and 360 (and others) so that’s the trade-off.”

He also clarified that Xbox backwards compatible titles won’t receive wide-screen support since most games didn’t support this function. Changing the frame buffer aspect wouldn’t be possible. “Fairly separate efforts. BC team gets stretched across OG and 360 (and others) so that’s the trade-off.”
