Dying Light 2 Devs Explain Reason for Not Using “Cut Content” for New DLC

Dying Light 2 developer Techland has recently spoken with media outlet WCCFTech explaining their reason for not using content that many gamers think is “cut content” from early previews in order to make new downloadable content.

Dying Light 2 lead designer Tymon Smektała explained in detail about their reason, actually for most developers, for not using “cut content” from early builds. Some gamers would think that the areas that they would come across in the game that seemed to have been not finished or missing some polish could be indicators of possible new content that the developers will use in upcoming DLCs like a new area. He clarifies that is actually not the case.

“It’s not that easy and it’s not really the way to approach game production,” the lead designer starts. “Some people don’t understand that when they find remnants of something in the game it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s cut content.”

“Usually, it’s just that — remnants of old prototypes, most often from the pre-production or early production stages, traces of past work that we either missed during clean-ups or left in the game for other reasons.”

It seems these sections are just as described: remnants of old prototypes that did not make the cut. Developers are just humans and they would also make some mistakes, and this was just one of those they forgot to clean up. It does not mean they left that section like that on purpose. Most of the time, they just forgot to clear that up and probably forgot all about it.

Smektała also shared the reason for not bringing those remnants at all. “Bringing them back costs more than creating something from scratch, even if the community creates these urban myths about them.”

Just using that remnant would not benefit them at all. It would even cost them more to use those. It would be better to develop new content from scratch instead.

“New DLCs and other content will definitely bring new areas for gamers to have fun with, but these will be created from scratch or will use the early prototypes more as an inspiration than actual resource,” the lead designer concluded.

So, if you find an area that seems to be unfinished, do not think too highly of it as a possible new DLC. Apparently, it is just what it is, an unfinished, forgotten section.

Dying Light 2 Stay Human is now available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
