Grand Overture Destiny 2 Exotic Machine Gun Guide

The Grand Overture in Destiny 2 is an Exotic Machine Gun that was first introduced at the start of season 16 as a battle pass exclusive reward. It is a slow-firing, high-damage gun that was greatly influenced by the weapons wielded by Cabal Colossi.

As the story goes, intelligence gathering got us to the point where the engineers of the Last City were able to reverse engineer Cabal tech and thus the weapon came to be. Just in time for the Psi-Ops that followed.

Where to Get the Grand Overture Machine Gun?

When the Grand Overture first launched, it was only available as a season pass reward in season 16. If you haven’t gotten the weapon yet, don’t worry. After its premiere season, the machine gun was carried over to the Monument of Lost Lights where you can buy it in exchange for:

    • 1 Exotic Cipher
    • 100,000 Glimmer
    • 200 Legendary Shards
    • 1 Ascendant Shard

Destiny 2 Grand Overture Weapon Stats

The Grand Overture is one of the slowest-firing machine guns in the game but every one of its Arc slug shots hits like a freight train. The weapon suffers greatly at long range. Thankfully, its primary use lies in destroying groups of enemies at close to mid range.

Hits with this weapon generate mini-rockets for the player to unleash. They can be seen on the left side of the screen where the buffs and de-buffs appear. A maximum of 20 rockets can be accumulated at once. And when the player holds down the reload button, it loads all the rockets into the Machine Gun and shoots out all at once at the pull of the trigger.

    • Rounds per Minute: 100
    • Magazine: 20
    • Barrel perk: Hammer-Forged Rifling – Durable ranged barrel. Increases range.
    • Magazine perk: Accurized Rounds – This weapon can fire longer distances. Increases range.
    • 3rd Colum Perk: Omega Strike – Land hits with the slug launcher to load missiles, hold [Reload] to then fire to launch several missiles in a volley.
    • Stock: Hand-Laid Stock – This weapon is optimized for recoil control. Increases stability.
    • Intrinsic Trait: Wraith of the Colossus – Heavy slug launcher that charges, then fires full auto while the trigger is held.

How to Get the Grand Overture Catalyst in Destiny 2?

How to Get the Grand Overture Catalyst

Once you’ve unlocked the Grand Overture, a quest marker for Banshee-44 will appear. Interact with him and he’ll give you the quest to unlock the Catalyst.

How to Upgrade the Grand Overture in Destiny 2

Turning in the quest given to you by Banshee-44 is the only way to unlock the Grand Overture’s Catalyst.

    Step 1:

    • Defeat 50 Cabal
    • Defeat 50 targets with Power Weapons
    • Rapidly defeat 15 targets

This step can be completed very quickly, depending on your location and how fast enemies spawn. My recommendation would be in the EDZ.

    Step 2:

    • Collect 200 catalyst data for calibration
    • Defeat a certain number of targets

This step is going to take you a while. Calibration occurs when you complete Vanguard Operations, Gambit, and Crucible matches, Seasonal playlist activities, or Nightmare Containment public events.

From my experience, calibration only goes up a couple of points per event completion. Even if you’re winning all the time in the Crucible, you’ll still be looking at 100 or different activities before you can unlock the Catalyst. Don’t worry about the number of targets since that can be completed very quickly if you use the Grand Overture a lot. My advice is to get the Starhorse’s favor in Dares of Eternity, allowing you to passive gain Power ammo. This affords you to have the weapon out for long periods of time while mowing down Dares of Eternity mobs.

    Step 3:

    • Return to Banshee-44.

Upon your return, Banshee will give the weapon a final once-over before handing it back to you with its brand-new Catalyst.

Unfortunately, the Catalyst will require further tuning in order to activate. Once equipped, you’ll need to take down 400 enemies before it activates. Should be easy enough.

The Catalyst gives you +20 Stability and +20 Handling, and missile explosions blind enemies on detonation. And finally, enemies defeated by missiles also explode.

    Destiny 2 Grand Overture Synergies

    Destiny 2 Grand Overture Synergies

The Grand Overture synergies very well with Arc 3.0. You can throw in anything on this build as long as you get benefits from defeating enemies using Arc weapons.

But really though, you don’t need to have an Arc class active to get the most out of the weapon. You can help yourself by equipping a couple of machine gun ammo finder mods. Maybe even a machine gun targeting mod.

As for Exotics, you can probably use the Mask of Bakris to improve the weapon’s damage potential. But that’s about it.

And that’s pretty much everything for this Grand Overture guide. I hope you found it useful.
