The makers of the PlayStation-exclusive rhythm and strategy series Patapon is finally developing its spiritual successor called Ratatan.
Ratatan Succeeds Patapon
VGC recently reported that the upcoming new game called Ratatan was announced at BitSummit. Patapon creator Hiroyuki Kotani and the original Patapon musician Kemmei Adachi were confirmed to be involved in this game. It is going to be developed by pH Studio, Ratata Arts, and Tokyo Virtual Theory. Ratatan also has a Kickstarter campaign that will go live on July 31, 2023 at 9 AM PT/12 PM ET.
No other details yet about Ratatan, but the developers did drop some interesting details. They said that it would include roguelike elements and multiplayer that will include up to four players.
“The three main game concepts are over 100 cute characters fighting it out on screen, four-player simultaneous battles, and more adventure and roguelike elements than Patapon had,” said producer Kazuto Sakajiri.
Still Some Hope for Patapon Fans
Kotani did drop a little bombshell to the fans of Patapon that gave them hope that the popular game might get a new entry in the future.
“There’s a possibility of maybe doing a Patapon sequel in the future, but for this we really wanted to make our own game, in our own style, with specific types of gameplay that reflect what we want. After that, if there’s a chance to speak to Sony about doing a Patapon sequel then we’ll go from there.”
Little History of Patapon
Patapon was a popular rhythm and strategy IP created by Hiroyuki Kotani and was co-developed by Pyramid and the now-shuttered Japan Studio. It was first released in 2007 for the PSP. Two sequels then sprouted, which were Patapon 2 and Patapon 3, which launched in 2008 and 2011 respectively. The first two games got ported to PS4 in 2017 and 2020, but unfortunately, Patapon 3 is still exclusive to the PSP. Fans are still waiting for that title to be ported soon.
