Baldur’s Gate 3 lets you romance multiple characters all at once. However the game doesn’t directly tell you who’s okay with you playing the field and who wants a more exclusive relationship. If you want to be intimate with multiple characters, we’ve made this guide that explains how romancing multiple characters work for Baldur’s Gate 3.

Can You Romance Multiple Companions in BG3

Yes, it is possible to romance multiple companions at the same time. However only a few companions are really okay with polyamory while most will demand a more exclusive relationship. You can flirt with everyone up until a point where they demand to be more monogamous.

Companions who are romantically exclusive:

  • Astarion: Even though he’s initially open to a polyamorous relationship, Astarion isn’t comfortable with most people in your group. In Act 1, he’s okay with you romancing Shadowheart though.
  • Gale: Gale will confront you when you’ve romanced someone else. He’ll ask you if you still want to be with him.
  • Karlach: While Karlach is initially open to the idea of polyamory so long as you don’t forget her, but this is only for the first act of the game. She’ll ask for a mutually exclusive relationship in Act 2.
  • Lae’Zel: She’s initially open to you romancing Karlach or Gale in Act 1, but not Shadowheart. She’ll want to be more serious in Act 2 which means her and only her.
  • Shadowheart: She’s okay with you being with other characters like Astarion in Act 1 but come Act 2 you’ll have to make the choice to be exclusive with her.
  • Wyll: Right from the get go Gale will let you know he isn’t interested unless the relationship is monogamous.

Companions who are okay with polyamory:

  • Halsin: This Druid can be romanced in Act 2, and unlike other companions is exclusively polyamory. Even if you’re aim is to romance him alone, you have to be intimate with another character to further his romance subplot.
  • Minthara: An optional party member at the cost of Halsin, Wyll, and Karlach, Minthara is okay with polyamory.

Romance in Baldur’s Gate 3 is complicated. Although none of your romanceable options are gender-locked, they do have a preference when it comes to sharing. Some characters like Halsin will be complete cool with an open relationship. Other romanceable options will want a more exclusive relationship and might be locked-on after a certain point. You can tell Gale for example who’s still okay with still sleeping with you that the other person you invited to your bed was just a fling. However when the romance with him gets serious, he will ask to be more exclusive.

Characters who are okay with polyamory will also not be okay with you romancing specific characters of a different religion, race, and personality. For example Karlach will initially be okay with polyamory so long as its Shadowheart in Act 1, but once you get to Act 2 she’ll demand to be more exclusive.

All your romance options in Baldur’s Gate 3 are party members who travel with you. So it would be realistically awkward to journey with people you’re two-timing. Considering you share a camp, it’s impossible for them to not notice someone else sneaking into your bed.

With Baldur’s Gate 3 having fully released, the true extent of how much you can romance characters is finally available. In the Early Access version of the game, the romance aspect was limited to inviting one character to share a bed with you at the celebration event after the Goblin Camp. You have more opportunities to romance other characters later on in the game.

How romance works in Baldur’s Gate 3 is pretty typical. If you’ve played games from Bioware, then this title from Larian Studios is on par. You earn your love interests’ affections by selecting dialogue options that they like. We have a guide for how to romance each companion in BG3.

There will be inevitable conflicts between two companions who share a different sense of morality so you’ll have to find a way to balance them. Astarion, who’s a bit of a bastard, loves showing dominance and being ruthless. This obviously won’t sit well with Wyll who’s a lot more heroic and altruistic.

Baldur’s Gate 3 is an incredibly big game with a lot of potential and personal choices. There’s still a lot to discover even when it comes to romance in the game. If you want to learn more about a character’s backstory, then romancing them is the way to go since it will unlock romance exclusive dialogue options.

Can You Romance NPCs in Baldur’s Gate 3?

Aside from your companions, the closest thing you get to romance with NPCs is by soliciting the services of the brothel in Wrym’s Crossing. However this is more of a paid for one night stand than a romance. NPCs outside of your party or potential companions can be romanced at all.

This means that even if you do pay to sleep with NPCs in the brothel, no new dialogue options will open up. Some dialogue options with other NPCs can be flirty but nothing romantic will come out of it. If you want to romance, you have to stick to your party.
